Description

W. F. DAVIS. ADJUSTABLE START FOR HAMES.
APPLICATION FILED DBO.14,'1911.
Patented June 24, 1913;
WILLIAM F. DAVIS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTABLE START FOR HAMES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM F. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Starts for Hames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness, and particularly to an adjustable start for hames.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of start for hames; and particularly to provide an adjustable start which may readily be accommodated to receive traces of different widths.
Bolt hames are provided with rigid proj ecting devices, technically termed starts, which are spaced appropriately from each other on one side of the hame, and it is frequently desirable to use traces of different widths between the starts. When this is the case, it is necessary to use longer transverse connecting or carrying bolts which are mounted in the outer ends of the starts. This ordinary means of providing for different widths of traces necessitates the merchant and wholesaler carrying in stock a large quantity of several sizes of the devices, in order to be able to meet sudden demands.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved movable start. Fig. 2 is a slightly modified form of start.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the hame 2, which may be of suitable design and construction, is shown as provided with a stationary guide bar or element 3 which is rigidly attached in any appropriate manner to the body of the hame 2. The rod 3 may be of suitable length and proportion, and extends substantially parallel with the adjacent face of the hame. Slidable upon the rod 3 is a movable hanger or start 4 provided with a perforation 5, through which the slide rod 3 projects. The end of the start 4 adjacent the hame 2 may be undercut or recessed, as at 6, to straddle the hame reinforce or metal strap 7, which is secured to the hame. At a suitable distance from, and substantially in line with, the axis of the start guide 3, there'is provided in Fig. l a stationary start or post 8, having a threaded eye 9 at its upper end.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed December 14, 1911. Serial No. 665,733.
The upper end of the movable start 4 is perforated, as at 10, and the perforation is approximately in aXial line with the perforation or thread 9 of the stationary start post 8.
It being one of the objects of the present' invention to provide a hame having a readily adjustable, simple and substantial start structure, this provision is accomplished, as may be manifest, by the relative adjustment between the stationary start or post 8 and the movable start 4. There is adapted to be inserted through the eye 10 of the start 4 a bolt 11 having a head 12 at one end, the bolt having a threaded portion 13 engageable with the threaded eye 9. The bolt 11 is protected from wear by a thimble or sleeve 14 of suitable diameter surrounding the bolt 11,which sleeve is adapted to rigidly space the movable start 4 the desired distance from the stationary start 8, to accommodate the wrapping or attachment of such trace as may be in use.
By means of the improved hame start, here shown, the owner of the harness structure may readily adjust the movable start 4 as far from the stationary post 8 as will be necessary to accommodate the insertion of a narrow or broad trace; the only necessary change being the unscrewing of the bolt 11 from the eye 9 and the insertion of a wearing thimble 14 of the desired length, which will space the movable start 4 and the stationary start 8 the requisite distance, then by passing a bolt, as 11, through the eyelO of the start 4 and through the thimble 14, the whole structure can be rigidly locked in position when the screw 13 is secured in the threaded portion 9 of the stationary start 8. A nut 15 passed over the outer end of the screw 13 forms an ample lock to hold the trace in adjusted position. This device affords a great latitude of adjustment in the start, and is readily set at the desired position, and is substantial and inexpensive.
In Fig. 2 I have represented a slight modification of the structure, in which the proj ecting starts 4' and 8 are of similar structure, the latter being threaded and both being slidable toward and from each other on the stationary start guide 3 attached to the hame. By the latter form of my invention it is possible to raise or lower the point of draft on the hame, by adjusting the starts toward the upper or lower end of their guide 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a hanie, of a stationary start fixed thereto and provided with a threaded eye, a rod extending along the hame and spaced therefrom, a start having a perforation receiving said rod whereby the start is adjust-ably mounted on the rod, said adjustable start having one end recessed to receive and straddle the adjacent surface of the hame and said adjustable start having an eye in the outer end, a bolt extending through the eyes of the fixed and movable starts and threaded into engagement With the eye of the fixed start, and a nut engaging the threaded end of said bolt.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
XVILLIAM F. DAVIS.
