Description

No. 891,167. PATENTED JUNE 16, 1908.
B. P. HARSH, HIP STRAP LINE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 6, 1907.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BLOUN'I FREDERICK HARSH, OF WABASH, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL E. HARSH, OF WABASH, INDIANA.
HIP-STRAP LINE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1908.
Application filed December 6, 1907. Serial No. 405,343.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BLOUNT FREDERICK HARsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wabash, in the county of l/Vabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hip-Strap Line- Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of harness but more particularly to a hip strap line holder and has for its object to provide a device of this class which is particularly simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and easy to apply to the harness. A-further object of my invention is to provide a hip strap line holder which is composed of a minimum amount of metal and which is extremely neat in appearance and an embellishment to the harness.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction of the hip strap line holder and particularly in the shape and form of the base adjacent the strap; and also in the construction which provides for fastening the holder with a single screw; and in the construction which allows the head of the screw to be drawn under the strap in such manner that the head of the screw is beyond the inner surface of the strap so that all possibility of chafing the horse by the screw head is avoided.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective View showing hip strap line holder attached to strap. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the sameand, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the strap and a portion of the hip strap line holder.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which: 1 indicates the hip strap line holder and 2 the leather strap of the harness. The hip strap line holder is formed as shown in Fig. 2 having an enlarged head 3 and a bear-- ing surface 4 to receive the driving reins. extension 5 is formed on the holder to increase the support so that the holder will carry the weight of the driving reins.
As shown in Fig. 3 the base 6 of the hip strap line holder is formed concave in cross section, while the said base is provided with a threaded opening 7 to receive a simple screw 8. A spud or tang 9 is formed on the extension 5 to enter a perforation 10 in the harness strap in order to steady the holder and prevent rotation of the same.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: The hip strap line holder being formed with a concaved base and the screw 8 passing through the harness strap 2 and entering the threaded opening 7 in the holder, said screw draws the under surface of the harness strap toward the holder in such manner that the under surface of the said strap is concaved as shown in Fig. 3, thus protecting the horse from being rubbed by the screw head. The spud or tang 9 entering the harness strap as shown in Fig. 2 revents any movement or rotation of the hip strap line holder, thus holding the holder in proper position on the harness. Where the hip strap line holder is attached to a light flimsy hip strap by the use of the spud and one screw the holder will not turn on the strap as it would without the spud and by using only one screw.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,
A hip strap line holder comprising a bearing surface for the driving rein, a base, said base being concaved, a threaded opening in said base to receive a screw passed through the harness strap, a spud or tang on said base constructed to enter the harness strap to prevent rotation or displacement of the hip strap line holder, the whole arranged in such manner that the said concaved base allows the head of the screw to draw beyond the normal surface of the harness strap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
BLOUNT FREDERICK HARSH.
