STATES PATENT @EETQE.
ALEXANDER M. SCHNEIDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ADJUSTABLE GARMENT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Garment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a garment which is adjustable at the waist, so that the same garment may be fitted to differently sized persons.
The invention comprises novel and efiicient means for effecting the adjustment and for fixing the garment in position after the desired adjustment has been effected.
The invention is applicable to drawers, skirts, shirt waists and wearing apparel generally, which must have a good fit at the waist.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention showing it applied to drawers; Fig. 2 a detail perspective view of part of the garment showing the adjusting means proper; Fig. 3 a top view of such adjusting means with the fasteners open, and Fig. 4 a similar view with the fasteners closed.
The drawing shows the invention applied to a pair of drawers 10, the waist band 11 of which is adapted to be taken in or let out at the right as well as at the left of slit 12, so that by uniformly setting both adjusting means, the desired change of waist meas ure may be effected. lVith many garments however, a single adjustment will suffice and as the two adjusting devices shown are of twin construction, the description of one device will equally apply to the other.
The waist band 11 is doubled for a small portion of its length to form a fold 13, which is fixed by a line of stitching 14. At the end of this fold, one portion of the waist band is turned back upon itself, so as r to face or overlie the fold. This portion of the waist band is provided with a row of button holes or similar openings 15, three of such openings being shown, though their number may obviously be varied. That other portion of the waist band which extends from the fold in the opposite direction carries at a substantial distance from the fold, a tab 16 secured to the waist band at its end or root by an upright line of stitching 17 The tab is however entirely Specification of Letters Patent.

disconnected from the garment along its upper and lower edges and also at its tip, so that it may be fully folded outward to freely expose any underlying parts. The length of the tab is such that when projected over the fold, its end will become substantially alined with the bight of the latter. To the outer side of fold 13 there is permanently attached a butt-on or similar fastener 18 which is adapted to be passed through either one of the openings 15 and to thence engage a button hole 19 or other coacting member provided for in the tip of tab 16.
In order to adjust the garment, tab 16 is swung back and the button-holed portion of the waist band is doubled upon itself beyond fold 13 to a greater or less extent, care be ing taken that one of its openings 15 is made to face button 18. The tab is then swung forward and the button is passed through the selected hole 15 into engagement with the button hole 19, so that in this way the waist band becomes fixed in its adjusted length, while at the same time the tab becomes fixed to the waist band.
It will be seen that by the construction described, the tab may be folded completely backward, so that while the waist band is being adjusted, the doubling thereof may be carried on in full view of the operator. In this way the tuck may be correctly laid and the proper opening 15 may be accurately alined with the button. It will also be seen that the button not only serves to fix the waist band in its new adjustment, but that it also constitutes the means for holding the tab tightly against the body of the band.
I claim:
An adjustable garment provided with a waist band having a plurality of button holes, a button on the waist band adapted to engage either one of said button holes, and a tab secured to the waist band sidewise of said button holes but disconnected from the waist band at its top and bottom, said tab extending beyond the button and being provided with an additional button hole which is also adapted to be engaged by said button.
ALEXANDER M. SCHNEIDER.
