CLASP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 22, 1909.

awe/whoa UNITED STATES PATENT oFnIcE.
EDWARD L. GUNDLA'CH, on ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CLASP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. GUND- men, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clasps, .of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a plan view of a hose supporter equipped with a pair of clasps each constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base member of one of the clasps. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pivoted jaw member of the clasp. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same. .Fig. 6 is a. perspective view illustrating the hose'supporter in use.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a piece of elastic webbing, and connected to its opposite ends is a clasp, each of said clasps comprising a base plate 2 having a slot 3 in one endthereof through which the elastic webbing 1 is'passed for securing the sametogether. The base member 2 of the clasp is provided with a projectingshank 4, the shank being rigid and having a lug 5 extending laterally from its outer end, said lug 5 being provided with a pivot hole 6. The pivoted jaw member 7 of the clasp comprises an elongated rigid flat metal bar provided with a pivot hole 8 therein, said jaw member being pivoted upon a pin 9 extending through the holes 6 and 8. Projecting from the jaw member 7 near one end thereof is a stud 10 provided with a head 11. In the base member 2 at Specification of Letters Patent.

one side thereof is a hole 12 of a size to readily admit the head 11 of the stud 10. From this construction and arrangement of the jaw member and the shank it willvbe seen that they provide a tapering slot increasing in diameter from the point of pivotal connection of the members to their connections with the base plate. Upon the insertion of the material between the shank and jaw member, when the same is applied to a garment, the members will have a tendency to spread, due to the elasticity of the fabric 1, in which event the material will be more securely held between the shank and jaw owing to the decreasing diameter of the I slot formed between the same, and the jaw member will be caused to lock itself to the base plate. v
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows:After the stocking a has been put on a portion of the stocking is gathered and inserted between the jaw member 7 and the shank 4 of one clasp. The jaw member 7 is then connected to the base member 2 by inserting the head 11 of the stud 10 through the opening 12. A slight pull upon the elastic webbing 1 will firmly and reliably connect the clasp to the stocking. The outer clasp is then secured to another portion of the stocking around the leg, as shown in Fig.- 6. The clasps being drawn one toward the other by means of the elastic webbing 1 will hold the stocking in place without interfering with the circulation-and without uncomfortable strains 011 the garment.
My invention is of simple construction, can be manufactured at low cost, is quick to attach and detach and is comfortable to the wearer. r
I claim A clasp for garment supporters comprising a base plate, a rigid shank integral with the base plate and projecting therefrom at an .angle relatively to the longitudinal center line thereof, a rigid j aw member pivo'tally secured at one'end to the free extremity of said shank and to one side thereof, said base plate being provided with an opening,'and a headed stud carried by the free end of the jaw member and adapted to be disposed within said opening, the relative positions of the jaw member and shank In testimonywhereof I afilx my signature forming a tapering slot, whereby the presin presence of two Witnesses. 7
sure of the material between said jaw memher and shank will engage the head of the EDWARD GUNDLACH' 5 stud with the upper surface of the base Witnesses:
plate to lock the jaw member with relatien CHAS. GUNDLAp'H,
to the base. THEODORE KOCH.
