BUCKLE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 18, 1919.

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PAUL KUEI-IN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO A.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION.
STEIN & COMPANY,
' BUCKLE.
Application filed July 18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. KUrHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Buckles, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and effective construction of buckle and the invention consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
Figure l is a view in front elevation show ing a portion of a garment supporter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the clamp lever in open position. Fig. 4 1s a detail view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The invention relates more particularly to that class of adjustable buckles such as are used in hose supporters, suspenders or the like and in which a clamp lever is em ployed to enable the buckle to be held securely in position after its adjustment has been eifected.
A designates the strap of a hose supporter cr suspender to which my improved buckle is attached. As shown, the buckle comprises a body portion B that may be made of wire bent to form the lower inwardly turned arms 6, the cross bar I) and the upper inwardly turned arms Z9 To the cross bar Z) will be connected the end of the strap A, such end of the strap being formed as a loop to engage the bar 6'. The upper arms 6 serve as the pivotal supports for the clamp lever C. As shown, this clamp lever is made of sheet metal having arms 0 bent to encircle the arms 6 and having a bent tongue 0 the edge of which is preferably serrated to enable it to more effectively grip the strap A. The parts of the buckle thus far described are of usual construction and the mode of operation of this type of buckle will be readily understood by those familiar with this class of devices. The body of the strap A passes between the looped end portion of the strap 55 that encircles the bar 6 and when the clamp Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oat 11 1921 1919. Serial No. 311,852.
lever is turned to the position shown in Fig.
2 of the drawings, the serrated edge portion of the bent tongue 0 will engage and grlp the strap and hold it against slipping through the buckle. The lower port-ion of the strap A will serve to hold a hose supporter loop D or similar device of any suitable construction, this hose supporter loop D being shown as provided with an elongated eye portion (Z to receive a portion of the stocking or other garment to be sus- 3 pended and with a flexible tab D carrying at its end a button 6Z2 adapted to enter the contracted portion of the eye (5 and hold the gripped portion of the stocking or other garment therein.
In order to enable the clamp lever C to be conveniently manipulated and swung from the closed position shown in F ig. 1 to the open position shown in Fig. 3, I pro vide this clam lever with a small flexible tab E, prefera ly of leather, and the upper portion of the tab is securely fastened to the under side of the clamp lever C by a part of the metal that is cut out of the clamplever C. Preferably, the tab E is held in place by stamping from the body of the clamp lever C two prongs 0 between which prongs and the under side of the body of the clamp lever C the upper end of the tab E will be securely held, as clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawing. To attach the tab E to the clamp lever C, the 7 upper portion of the tab will be placed upon the under side of the lever C opposite the opening in that portion of the lever from which the metal forming the prongs has been stamped; and the prongs will then be firmly pressed toward each other and against the under side of the tab E, causing the tab to be securely gripped between the prongs and the under side of the clamp lever. The pressure exerted upon the prongs in forcing them to the closed position will slightly compress the upper portion of the tab into the opening formed in the clamp lever and this will aid. in more effectively holding the tab in place.
My invention presents the first instance, as far as I am aware, of a buckle of the character described having a flexible tab by which it can be manipulated, said tab being connected to the clamp lever of the buckle by a part of the metal stamped from said clamp lever and serving to hold the flexible 110 tab in place, and within the scope of the vent ion the details of construction may be varied. Thus, for example, instead of two prongs 0 a single prong might'be used.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A buckle of the character described, C0111- prising the combination with a body por- 10 tion, of a clamp lever having a transverse the back of said clamp lever and held between said slot and the metal tongues displaced in forming said slot.
