' GARTER GRIP Filed Oct. 25, 1935- mm i INVENTOR. L 0 0/6 Po 0K5 ORNEY Patented Sept. 22, 1936 UNITED STATES GARTER GRIP Louis Bocke, Brooklyn,
Alphonsus J. Donahue,
N. -Y., assignor to Stamford, Conn.
Application October 25, 1935, Serial No. 46,689
5 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices and has particular reference to a garter grip.
An object of the invention is to provide an im- 5 proved grip of simple and practical construction wherein the elements thereof are easily and quickly assembled and the tab securely aflixed to the loop member in a manner which will produce a substantially flat and thin grip of neat appear- 10 ance.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodi- 15 ment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away and shown in section, of a garter grip constructed in accordance with the invention. V
Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof, the dotted lines illustrating a position the tab of the grip may assume when the latter is opened.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the loop member of the grip.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the tab thereof together with the sleeve-like connecting member utilized to attach the tab to the loop member.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1, and
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-5 of Figure 1.
As shown in the drawing, the grip comprises three elements, namely, the loop member 'I,- the tab 8 and the sleeve-like or tubular member 9 utilized to connect the tab to the loop member.
The member I may be stamped from a suitable material such as metal, and the upper portion thereof comp-rises a transverse bar l about which is looped a supporting strip l l indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1 which is adapted to suspend the 0 grip from a corset or other garment. Below the bar In and spaced therefrom the member 1 is formed with a pair of inwardly projecting opposed lugs l2 with contiguous limiting shoulders l3, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The tab 8 is made of any desirable soft material such as rubber or a fabric and is provided adjacent its lower end with a button l4 projecting from one surface thereof with its outer edge spaced from said surface so as to receive the re- 50 stricted lower end I of the loop member 1 when the grip is attached to a stocking or the like. The upper edge of the tab 8 is provided with an enlargement l6, preferably rounded in cross section.
and extending transversely of the width of said 55 tab.
The member 9, which is in theform of an openended sleeve or tube is of greater length than the enlargement l6 and is split longitudinally as indicated at ll so that said enlargement may be inserted laterally into said sleeve with the portion of the tab 8 contiguous to said enlargement projecting through said split. The size of the enlargement l6 and the interior diameter of the sleeve 9 is such that the enlargement will snugly but loosely engage therein before the assembly 10 operation of the variouselements of the grip is completed.
After the enlargement has been inserted into the sleeve and centered therein with the ends of the enlargement spaced from the ends of the sleeve, the latter is connected to the loop member 1 by inserting the lugs i2 thereof into the ends of said sleeve through the ends of the split II, the length of the sleeve being such that it will be disposed between the shoulders I3 which will contact the ends of the sleeve to thereby limit any lateral shifting movement thereof. When in position, the enlargement I6 is disposed between the lugs l2 and the assembled device is then placed in a press which will operate to constrict the sleeve 9 and thus cause the edges of its split H to clamp against the tab 8 to secure it in position. Also the ends of said split edges which extend beyond the edges of the tab are crimped together as indicated at 8 so as to be closed, or partially closed, about the lugs l2 so that accidental detachment of the sleeve from the loop member will be prevented.
It is obvious from the foregoing description that the connection between the tab 8 and the loop member 1 provides for a free swinging or pivotal movement between said elements as indicated in Figure 2 'of the drawing and that when the two elements are in cooperative gripping position the same will form a substantially 40 flat structure and the tab will present a smooth surface to the body of the wearer.
What is claimed is: V
1. In a garter grip, a loop member, a tab,
a split sleeve enclosing a portion of the tab with an adjacent portion thereof projecting through the split in said sleeve, the edges of said split being clamped against said projecting portion and the ends of said edges being crimped together to close the split in said sleeve, and means on said loop member for supporting said sleeve thereon.
2. In a garter grip, a loop member, a tab, a split sleeve of greater length than the width of said tab, said sleeve enclosing a portion of the tab with an adjacent portion thereof projecting through the split in said sleeve, the edges of said split being clamped against said projecting portion and the ends of said edges beyond the adjacent edges of said tab being crimped together to close the split in said sleeve to thereby prevent lateral shifting of said tab relative to said sleeve, and means to support said sleeve on said loop member. 3. In a garter grip, a loop member, a tab, a split sleeve enclosing a portion 'of said tab with an adjacent portion thereof projecting through the split in said sleeve, the edges of said split being clamped and the ends of said edges being crimped together to close the split in said sleeve, and inwardly projecting opposed lugs formed on said loop member and extending into the ends of said sleeve to support the latter on said member.
4. In a garter grip, a loop member having inagainst said projecting portion wardly projecting opposed lugs and limiting shoulders contiguous thereto, a sleeve supported by said lugs and engaging said shoulders to limit lateral shifting of the sleeve relative to said loop member, and a'tab supported by said sleeve in cooperative relation to said loop member.
' 5. In a garter grip, a loop member having inwardly projecting opposed lugs and limiting shoulders contiguous thereto, a tab, a split sleeve supported by said lugs and engaging said shoulders to limit lateral shifting of the sleeve relative to said loop member, said sleeve enclosing a portion of said tab with an adjacent portion of the latter projecting through the split in said sleeve, and the edges of said split being clamped against said projecting portion and the ends of said edges being crimped together to close the split in said sleeve.
