BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1?,1913.
Application filed August 5, 1912. Serial No. 713,350.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB DIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Bed, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds and more particularly to small beds or cribs for use by children, its principal object being to provide means whereby flies and like insects can be kept from the occupant 'of the bed, there being a top screen or panel mounted in a novel manner and which can be shifted readily into or out of position upon the top of the structure, said screen, when not in use, having means whereby it can be suspended at one side of the crib where it will not be in the way.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crib embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough, the top panel being shown suspended in inactive position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the structure with the parts arranged as in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a combined grip and support.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the end supports of the crib, the same being connected by side panels 2 above which are arranged screen frames 3. These screen frames are adapted to extend above the mattress and coverings in the crib and both the screen frames and panels are connected to the structures 1 in any suitable manner.
Hingedly connected to the upper portion of each side panel 2 is an arm 4, one of these arms being located adjacent each end of the panel 2. Both arms are hingedly connected,
as at 5, to one side portion of a top panel 6 consisting of a frame having a screen fabric 7 secured thereto. This top panel 6 is adapted normally to bear downwardly on the upper edges of the two screen frames 8 and to fit snugly against the end structures 1 so that, when the top panel is in its normal position, the interior of the crib is completely screened in and it thus becomes impossible for flies, mosquitos or the like, to annoy the occupant of the crib.
Secured to that side of the panel 6 remote from the hinged arms 4, is a plate 8 constituting a lift or handle and formed integral with this handle is a tongue 9 having a flange 10 at the free end thereof. This tongue 9 is adapted to lap the side of the adjacent screen frame 3 when the panel 6 is in normal or closed position. l/Vhen it is desired to shift the panel 6 out of normal position, the same is shifted upwardly by means of the handle or lift 8 and the arms 4 permitted to swing downwardly to the posit-ions shown in Fig. 2 whereupon the panel 6 is swung toward the adjacent screen frame 3 so as to bring the tongue 9 onto the upper edge of said frame and with its flange 1O lapping the inner surface of the frame as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the top panel 6 will be held close to one side of the crib and out of the way, but in position where it can be grasped and elevated to normal position.
What is claimed is A device of the class described including side panels, screen frames thereon, a top panel normally resting on the screen frames, arms hingedly connected to one of the side panels and to one side of the top panel, said arms extending across the adjacent screen frame and constituting means for supporting the top panel vertically at one side of the device, a lift secured to the top panel, and means integral with the lift and extending beyond the top panel for engaging the upper edge of one of the screen frames to hold the top panel in vertical position while supported by the arms.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JACOB DIEHL.
