L. H. GOODWIN. BED COVER CONTROLLER.
No. 690,005. Patented Sept. 14,1897;
LEVI n. coonwin, or CINCINNATI, on o.
sen-coves CONTROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 590,005, dated September 14, 1897.
Application filed January 21, 1897. Serial No. 620,068. (No model.)
To all whont it near/y concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI H. GOODWIN, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Cover Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a bed-cover controller which is applied to a bed.
andholds the covers in their properposition and prevents them from being displaced by the movements of the occupant of the bed, and at the same time which has a vertical movement to accommodate the controller to the movements of the sleeper in turning.
The features of my invention will be more fullyset forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of one of the webs. Fig. 3 is a sectional detailed view of the manner of supporting one of the standards. Fig. 4 is an inside plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of one of the modified forms of standards. Fig. 6 is an inside plan view of the same. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the standard-journals.
A represents the head-board, B the footboard, and C the side rails, of an ordinary bed.
D represents four standards attached upon opposite sides of the side rails. Preferably two standards are placed upon opposite sides near the head of the bed, and the other two in a similar position near the foot.
cl represents fastening-rings encircling the standards. It will readily be seen that these rings are susceptible of a vertical movement on the standards.
E represents webs extending across the bed and attached at opposite ends to the rings cl. These webs are preferably detachably'connected to the rings, and any desired form of fastening device may be employed.
6 represents tapes securing the coverlet to the web. I have shown it secured in two places; but it may be secured in more places, if desired, and by any suitable means.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown the standards secured to the side rails by means of a metallie shank F, seating in bracketsf, secured to the side rail.
It is often desirable to have the standards adjustable, so that they can be moved to a horizontal position when it is desired to apply them to. folding beds, or for any other purpose. In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown means for adjusting the standards to a horizontal position when desired.
G represents a face-plate attached to the side rail of the bed, and II a disk carrying socket h to receive the standard D.
I represents an elastic washer, and J a clamping bolt or screw.
h represents lugs on the inner face of the disk H, which engages corresponding recesses in the faceplate G, the faces of the two disks GH being held in contact by the elastic washer I and clamping-bolt J. It will thus be seen that the standards D are held vertically by friction and radially moved to a horizontal position, or the reverse, as desired, the lugs 71. serving to lock the. parts in their adjusted position.
The folding form of standards are the equivalent of the detachable standards, but I deem the detachable form the best.
This controller prevents any disarrangement of the covers and does not have the disadvantage of pinning the covers down, but rises and falls on the standards to accommodate itself to the movements of the occupant.
Having described my invention, I claim-- 1. A bed cover controller consisting of standards attached to the side rails of a bed, in combination with webs detachably con nected to said standards and having vertical movement thereon, and fastening devices attached to said web and adapted to engage with the covers, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a bedstead, standards detachably connected to the side rails near the head, and the web E secured to said standards byloose ring attachments substanlially as specified.
A bed-cover controller consisting of standards detachably connected to the side rails of a bed near the head and foot thereof, one or more webs detachably connected to rings mounted upon said standards, and fasbrackets secured to the side rails of a bed, one or more webs E stretehed'aeross the bed and detaehably connected to said standards and having; Vertical movement thereon, and fastening devices secured to said web substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LEVI II. GOODWIN. Witnesses:
