GEM-SETTING.
:i ,ociase Application filed October 23, 190$).
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented June 10, 191 3.
Serial No. 524,221.
To all 'w/zma it may concern lie it known that 1, MAX C. lvlm'nn, a citizen ol the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Brooklyn, county o'l Kings, and State o'l. New York, have in vented certain new and useful l1nprove ments in tiem-t-iettings, oil which the :tollowing is a full, clear, and exact descrip- 'tion.
This invention relates to improvementsin gem settings and has among its objects to provide a form of setting which will att'ord nirt-icular protection to the gem, will be simple in construction and ot such nature as to lit the gem properly and all'ord protection against chipping, at the same time leaving the setting open to proper access olf light and facilitating cleaning of the gem and the setting.
\Vith these and incidental objects in view the invention consists in the novel constructions hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, which drawings show a preferred form (it embodiment of my improvements.
In said drawings .l igure '1, represents a side view of a linger ring embodying a gem setting having my improvements; Fig. 2 represents a side view ot the same without the gem. Fig. 3 represents a top view without the gem, and Fig. it: represents a top view with the gem.
I have shown my implovcments more particularly as applied to a finger ring, but it: will be understood that these inventions are equally applicable to various terms of gem settings not only for rings but also :lor brooches and many other varieties o'l' pieces of jewelry and ornamental devices in which such settings may be used.
In Fig. 2 the ring is shown as having a shank 20, and at its upper portion two shoulders 21. with an intervening hase pon tion 22. ()n this supporting base is mounted an open. framework construction comprising a plurality of laterally circular hands 23, 2t and .25. These bands are pre'l erably arranged horizontally in parallel planes with their centers coinciding with thi aXis ot the whole setting; and are o'l. variable diameter From the small diameter of hand 23 to the large diameter of hand :25. These hands are connected by a plurality of longitudinal posts 26. 'lhes posts are arranged on the inside of the bands, and by being connected to the latter form an open framework c0nstruction for the setting. The gem 27 is placed on the interior of this basket-like construction, and is suitably held in place by the upright posts 26 by bending over upon the gem the upper extremities of Said posts. Of course these posts 26 diverge outward in accordance with the increasing diameters ol the laterally circular hands.
it results in this construction that the girdle ot' the stone or gem is protected from breaking or chipping, the additional light which is allowed to enter the space around the gem materially improves the appearance ot the stone, and the open nature oi the con struction also makes it very easy to clean the setting and the gem. Moreover, the Formation of the setting is such as to more readily con'l'orm to the shape ol? gems having a particular cutting, such as diamonds and other similar stones; and the stone is more securely held in place under the protection of the circular bands separating the vertical posts.
Although the form of construction herein shown and described constitutes a preferred form of emlnuliment ol my im 'n'ovement, yet it is to be understood that various other terms ol construction might be utilized, all coming within the scope of the claims which 'lollow.
\Vhat is claimed is:
l. A gem setting comprising an article of jewelry constituting a supporting base, and an open framework mounted and attached to the base, consisting of a plurality of posts adapted to engage and hold a gem at their upper ends, and a plurality ol? horizontal bands closely encircling and fastened to the posts.
2. A gem setting comprising an article ot jewelry constituting a suppm'ting base, and
attached thereto an open framework comture in the presence of tWo subscribing Witposed of a plurality of posts spaced equinesses. distantly apart and adapted to engage and hold a gem at their upper ends, and a plu- 5 rality of horizontal circular bands closely encircling and fastened to the posts.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa- MAX G. MEYER.
lVitnesses LILIAN E. lVEINsTooK, ISAAC L. MEYER.
