Description

Jan. 10, 1933. HA PULVER 1,894,195
VORIMNMSJNTAL BEAD CHAIN Filed April 26, 1932 Patented Jan. 10, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ORNAMENTAL Application filed April 28,
My invention relates to improvements in bead chains of a type adapted to form bracelets, necklaces and the like for ornamental purposes. l
`While my invention may be applied to any type of bead it is particularly adapted to be used on a so-called type of button bead, which has hitherto been mounted in the usual mounting prior to Stringing on a chain or other type of string. In place of the usual mounting I carefully select beads which preferably have oppositely disposed flat portions on the surface thereof and provide String holes therein. I then String this type of bead on a string without any mountings at all and as a Substitute for said mountings, I employ flat discs strung on said String means between each bead, abutting the oppositely disposed flat portions of adjacent beads and being alternately inclined relative to each other. By employing these discs and Stringing them on string means intermediate of the beads, he discs appear to form a mounting for each individual bead and I am enabled to provide an attractive type of bead string. When the string is pulled tightly the discs take a shape obliquely behind each bead to give a simulation of an individual mounting therefor.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel method of Stringing beads of a general type. of button beads having polygonal facets thereon or oppositely disposed flat portions thereon and making mountings therefor by the simple expedient of Stringing dises intermediate the beads.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of an embodiment thereof such as is shown in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing, Fig. l is a front elevation. of a bead chain constructed in accordance with my invention with the chain in curved u position.
BEAD CHAN 1932. Serial No. 607,568.
generally indicates a bead chain constructed in accordance with my invention.
My invention is particularly adapt-ed to provide a novel method of Stringing So-called button beads having polygonal facets without providing individual mountings therefor on the chain or without providing a solid mounting having individual bead holes therein. However, any type of bead may be employed and I employ the word bead to broadly include not only glass or semiprecious beads or buttons, but also if desired precious or other types of stones or ornaments, which may be mounted similarly to beads. The beads are provided in the embodiment shown with a flat top and bottom portion 12 and 14 respectively and the flat polygonal facet portions 16 extending upwards from the median line 18 thereof and the similar complementary flat polygonal facet portions 20 extending downwardly from the median line thereof and the string holes 22 extending diametrically thereof below the median line thereof. While my invention is primarily adapted for Stringing beads of this type, it is obvious that for'the purpose of my invention that the beads vmay only need to have oppositely disposed flat portions such as two oppositely disposed individual lower facet-S 20a and 20" on the lower surface thereof and the remainder of the beads being round or of any other shape desired. To form the beads 11 into the bead string 10,"1 preferably employ the string means Q4 extending through said string holes 22. While any type of a String maybe employed, I preferably as shown employ the flexible chain 24. As the improved mounting means 26 for the individual beads 11, I preferably provide the flat disc shaped members 26 strung on said string means between each bead, each abutting an alternate flat facet portion 16 and 2O respectively on adjacent beads and being alternately inclined relative to said beads to form the outwardly flaring mounting portion 28 shown in Fig. l, giving a simulation of an outwardly flaring mounting on each side of each respect-ive bead. Said disc members 2o are provided with a preferably central 100 hole 30 for receiving the flexible string means 24. Y -4 In the preferred embodiment shown I preferably only employ the diametrically oppositely ldisposed facets or flat portions and 20bon each bead extending downwardly from the median line thereof 'and I so diametrically locate the string holes that they extend dia metrically thereof below the median line. 18 thereof andl then arrange the beads in a line so that alternate beads' will face upwardly and downwardly and as each head reversed to faire alternately upwardly and downward- 1 v it is thenobvious that the dise members will abut oppositely disposed lower flat. facet portions o' alternate beads below the median line thereof and that the other parts of the beads may be round or of any other desired shape. 'f e It is thus apparent that I have provided a novel mounting for beads or other types of stones of this general type having oppositely disposed flat facet portions di'a'metrieally opposite thereon, preferably below the median; line thereof and string holes therein preferably below the median line thereof, and niountings for said stones, jewels orfbeads comprising flat dises strung on a llexihle string means between each bead, each flaring outwardly so as to .simulate a mounting built. rightinto the string strueture itself and which when the Vstring is extended will com pactl'v fitagainst the faeet portions to eoin paetly hold the entire head string together.. of a pleasing appearance, relatively cheap to manufacture and relatively easy to construct. .Y
It is understood thatvmy invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scopo of the appended elainis.
