RACK FOR HOLDING GYMNASIUM' APPARATUS.
i ,oeacen Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1913.
Application filed July 27, 1912. Serial No. 711,847.
To au whom @'25 may concern.'
Be it known that l, ALBERT J. THORNLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Racks for Holding Gymnasium Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in racks for holding gymnasium apparatus, and pertains more particularly to a rack of this type that is used. for the support of dumb bells, lndian clubs, or any other gymnasium article having a head.
The object of the invention isV to provide a rack of the type set forth of simple, novel and economical construction, which has means incorporated therein for effectively locking the apparatus in place, and in which a plurality of dumb-bells, Indian clubs or the like, are locked in position by unitary locking means that are common to all.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a rack constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. F 3 is a fragmentary enlarged top plan view. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6--6 of Fig. 4.
rlhe rack is formed preferably of she-et metal, and may be made of vario-us lengths governed by the number of pieces of gymnasium apparatus which are to be held or supported thereby. The rack is composed of a top horizontal plate 1 that has its rear side turned downwardly at 2 in orde-r to allow of same being secured, by any suitable fastening means, to a wall or other support. Top 1 is formed with a plurality of spaced slots 3 that extend through the front side thereof, the material between the slots being curved upwardly and outwardly at 4 to provide abutments that engage the heads of the dumb-bells or the like to restrict outward movement thereof. At intervals throughout the plate 1 arms 7 that overlie same are pivotally connected at 5 to supports 6 carried by the plate 1. The arms 7 extend over the top plate 1 and at their outer ends carry a rod 8 which o-verlies the abutments 4 of plate 1 and coperates with Jthe latter to prevent removal of the dumb bells or the like `when the parts occupy the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. Each arm 7 has `a tail 9 that is curved downwardly to extend through a slot 10 provided therefor in plate 1. For the purpose of locking the articles` in the rack a lever 11 is rigidly mounted on a shaft 12 that is journaled in bearings 13 carried by the plate 1, t-he shaft extending throughout the entire length of the rack. Lever 11 is provided with a stop or abutment 14 which extends downwardly with relation to shaft 1,2 and which is adapt-ed to engage the vertical rear side 2 of plate 1 as depicted in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in order to restrict the downward movement of the locking member 11 when the latter is in unlocked position. Locking lever 11 is formed with a slot 15 to receive the tail 9 of arm 7 and is further formed with an opening 16 to receive the perforated lug 17 that is secured on the under face of plate 1 at its front. The perforation of lug 17 is located below lever 11 when Athe latter is in locked position to allow a padlock 18 to be received in the perforation of lug 17 and thereby prevent movement of lever 11 to unlocked position. When the parts are in the position shown in full lilies in Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be seen that the tail 9 of arm 7 will engage the front wall 19 formed by the slot 15 of lever 11 and thereby prevent raising of arm 7 and therewith rod S to the unlocked position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The locking lever 11 above described is employed in connection with but one of the arms 7 but each of the other arms 7 islocked by a locking member 20 slotted at 21 to receive the tails 9 of the other arms 7, which locking members 20 are rigidly secured by set screws 22 to shaft 12 so as to partake of the movements thereof. The locking members 20 are identical with the locking member 11, with the exception that they are shorter than the latter and the padlock and perforated lug is not used therewith.
To remove the articles from the rack, the locking lever 11 is moved downwardly to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 carrying with it all of the locking members 20, thus releasing the rails 9 of all of the arms 7 from said locking members, whereupon the latter with the rod 8 is lifted upwardly and backwardly until it rests against the wall, as sho-wn in dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus rendering the full length of the rack accessible for the purpose of` removing or replacing the articles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A rack for supporting dumb bells and the like consisting of a horizontal plate having its rear side turned downwardly for securement to a support, arms pivotally mounted on said plate above the same and having their free ends extending adjacent the front side thereof, a rod carried by said free ends of the arms, said plate having its front side slotted outwardly to extend adj acent said rod when the latter is in normal position, a tail depending from the rear end of each arm and extending down through a slot provided therefor in said plate, a shaft journaled below the plate and at the rear side of said plate, a locking lever secured to said shaft and having an opening to receive the tail of one of the arms, a perforated lug depending from the plate and passing through an opening provided therefor in said lever, a padlock to engage through the perforation of the lug to lock the lever against downward movement and second locking members for the remainder of the arm tails rigid on the shaft and slotted to receive said last named tails.
2. A rack for supporting dumb bells and the like consisting of a slotted plate, arms pivoted to the plate and having depending tails that project down through slots provided therefor in the plate, a rod carried by the arms to close the outer ends of the slots,
and means cooperating with the tails to lock the arms against movement.
3. A rack for supporting dumb bells and the like consisting of a slotted plate, arms pivoted to the plate and having depending tails that project down through slots provided therefor in the plate, a rod carried by the arms to close the outer ends of the slots, a shaft journaled beneath the plate, slotted locking elements rigidly connected to said shaft to receive the tails in said slots thereof, and means to lock the shaft against rotary movement.
t. A rack for supporting dumb bells and the like including a member to receive the dumb bells, means to prevent removal of the dumb bells from said member, a series of projections in connection with said means extending below the member, an element having pivotal movement and being mounted longitudinally of said member beneath the latter to lock said means against movement, said element having a series of devices thereon which are movable therewith to engage said projections, and means to lock the element against pivotal movement.
5. A rack for supporting dumb bells and the like, consisting of a slotted supporting member, pivoted means to close the slots of said supporting member having a plurality of projections which extend below the supporting member, pivoted means common to all of the projections located beneath the supporting member and formed to receive each of said projections to lock the closing means against pivotal movement and means to lock the pivoted means against movement.
G. A rack for support-ing dumb bells and the like consisting of a supporting member formed to receive the dumb bells, a pivoted member to hold the dumb bells locked having a series of depending elements which project below the supporting member, means to engage each of said depending elcments to hold the pivoted member against movement, and means to lock said means which engages the depending elements.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT J. THORNLE Y.
