Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding `part-s. v V'.lhe object of this invention is to provide a stumpextractor which will fbe` yielding during operation, so that it will not require a change of position, if, by the fweightof a stump, one side should draw heavier than the other. f `The inventionncousists, chiefly, in suspending the y entire operating apparatus from a semi-spherical yoke, which rests upon a` perforated jplate, `so as to he-swiv- `Jeled thereon. The entire'apparatus can thus swing with theyoke', tobe yielding in every direction'. A, in the'drawingrepresents the supporting-plate i of my improved stump-extraccor.1

The same rests upon four, more or which are, with their upper ends, tted intosockets a a, that are provided for them -on the plate A, screws or pins bservingto locksaid legs vto the sockets.

' D is a semi-spherical plate or blocik, large enough to rest in the circulal-opening of the plate A, and pro'- -vided with two spring p wls d d, which lock and support the tivo toothed bars EIE of-'t-he elevating apparatus. v

` 'Ihedower ends of the bars E are pivoted-to the workingflever F.' Their upper parts enterthc plat-e or yoke D, and are suspended from the same by the pawls. As the lever FV isrocked, itwill also cause the yoke to rock, in case the Weight should not draw exactly in the" middle.

The yke will readily rock on the plate A, and willv allow the bars E and lever F to rock with it.

Thereby, if the stump pulls heavier on one side than the other, the moving ofthe whole machine will be unnecessary.

From the lever is suspended a elevis, G, in 4which the chain H can be readily locked. The use of the hooks on the chain is thereby dispensed with, as the Iatt-ermay be merely dropped, with any desired link, into the clevis, and wll'be, at once, properly held.

The yoke may be attened at the lower part, and need not be a full hemisphere; it can be somewhat smaller,`if desired. y p
