Description

EARL GUYER, or woLcoTT, VERMONT.
Letters PatentNo. 82,939, dated October 13, 1868.
IMPROVED BUTTER-TUB.
The Sc'hedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL GUYER, of Wolcott, in the county of Lamoille, and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Butter-Tubs and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
" reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a butter-tub so as to hold the butter down in the brine, whether there is much or little butter in the tub'. Y
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring tothe annexed drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation in section, and
Figure 2 a plan view.
Figure 3 shows a cross-bar used.
A represents a butter-tub, made in any ofthe known and usual ways.
B is a movable cover, which is about the same size as the bottom of the tub, and smaller than the mouth, as butter-tubs vare generally made tapering.
The movable covervB is provided, on its upper side, with two or more keys, O C, which are provided with teeth, so that, when the cover B is put on top the butter, it can .be fastened down, so as to prevent the butter from rising up out of the brine. i
When there is so much butter in the tub that the lcover B would be near the top, the keys C C would not reach as far as the sides of the tub, to fasten the For that purpose, I place a cross-bar, D, across the top of the tub, the said bar being cut atthe ends, as shown in g. 3, so as to rest on the top of the tub.
To hold the cross-bar D steady, there are two small metal bars, E E, placed on the side of the tub, the ends of which are bent over the ends of the cross-bar D; or, in place of these bent metal bars, I may use straps, which will be secured, in some suitable manner, to the ends of the cross-bar D, as shown in red lilies in fig. 2.
' If necessary, I may, when the movable cover B is down some distance below the cross-bar D, place blocks on said cover, under the bar, which would hold it down the same as the keys above described.
Having thus fully described my invention,
vWhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by- Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe butter-tub A, cover B, keys C (l, cross-bar D, and bent metal bars E E, or their equivalents, substantially as 'and for the purposes herein set forth. 4
l In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 19th day of September, 1868.
EARL GUYER.
