COAT.
Application filed August 1, 1912.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH E. OrrnN- rrnIMnn, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coats, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
One of the objects of my invention is to so construct a coat as to counteract the tendency to round shoulders or stoop shoulders which exhibits itself in men who pursue sedentary occupations or do work involving more or less standing and leaning for ward and which sometimes manifests itself in growing youths. Heretofore this has been accomplished in a measure by shoulder braces, but these, while helpful, are not invariably preventive, and many people, for various reasons, cannot be induced to wear them. In my invention it is sought to produce, solely by the construction of the coat, a function analogous to that produced by the ordinary shoulder braces and at the same time avoid any wrinkling of the coat that would be inevitably produced by the mere attachment to the coat of any device operating` on the principle of shoulder f braces.
The invention will be clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which- Figure l is a rear view of a coat constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an inside plan view of the neckcape and elastic strip detachedV from the coat. Y Y
The coat a may be cut on ordinary lines except for the attachment embodying my invention. Secured to the inside of the coat, near the top thereof and betweenl the shoulders, is a neck-cape, the same comprising two pieces of hair cloth b each covered by an inner and outer lining 0. Each of these pieces b c is secured at its upper edge to the neck portion of the coat immediately above the inner lining of the coatand opposite the turn-down collar portion on the out- Specicaticn of Letters Patent.

side of the coat'. The outer side edge of each piece b c is secured,` along part of its length, to the coat between the neck portion and the arm-hole and overlies the shoulder; and along the remainder of its length is secured to the coat at the edge of the arm-hole. The lower edge of the piece o c is free, as is also the inner side edge. One of the pieces c preferably overlaps the inner edge of the other.
Secured to the rear of the neck-cape Z) c is an elastic strip d. One end of the strip cl y is secured to the inside face of one piece b c a short distance from its outer edge. The other end of the strip al is secured to the inside face of the other piece c a short dis tance from its outer edge. The strip d is located relatively near the lower edge of the neck-cape, and its general direction is transversely of the coat and parallel to the lower edges of the pieces b c if said edges are made straight. The strip cl extends through loops c secured to the pieces b c near their inner edges. The eHect of the elastic strip d is to exert a pull upon the shoulder portion of the coat toward the vertical center of the back of the coat, thus tending to draw together the shoulders of the wearer, who finds the coat comfortable proportionately to the extent that he maintains an erect posture with his shoulders thrown back. The stiffened neck-cape obviates the wrinkling of the back of the coat that would otherwise occur. The neck-cape and elastic strip, by virtue of their construction and arrangement, thus cooperate to produce a coat that tends to draw back the shoulders while maintaining the smoothnessand lit of the back of the coat.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim .and desire to protect by Letters Patent is- 1. A coat comprising a main body ygarment., a pair of stiifening pieces'secured to the inside of the coat and on the right and left sides thereof respectively, eachVy stiftening piece being secured at its'upper edge to the neck portion of the coat and overlying the shoulder and at its outer edge secured ening pieces at opposite sides of the center of the garment.
2. A coat comprising a main body garinent, a pair of stil'fening pieces secured to the inside of the coat and on the right and left sides thereof respectively, each stiftening piece being secured along its upper and outer edges to the neck portion of Jche coat, the part of the coat between the neck portion Vand arm hole and along a part of one arni hole, the inner and lower edges of the strips being unsecured and the inner edges overlappinge and an elastic strip extending transversely of the garment and secured at its opposite ends to the stiiening pieces near the edges thereof secured attlie arm holes.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set inv hand7 at Philadelphia, on the 80th day of July, 1912.
