To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL JUNGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Credential-Carrying Cases, of which the following is a specification.

.The invention relates to metallic cases for holding the credential card or sheet of secret, benevolent and other kindred orders or societies. It is customary to issue to each member of such societies after he has fully qualified as such member a card or sheet This card or sheet is or may be frequently called for by society officials and it is therefore necessary for such member to have said sheet or card ready for production.

Objects of the invention are to provide a novel casing for safely keeping and protecting such credential from loss or the effects of wear, and also that the same may be readily and conveniently producible when desired; to provide a novel casing and means for holding and folding said credential within the casing so that it may be readily and conveniently opened apart and folded up again; to provide such novel means for holding the credential card within the case and enabling quick and certain identification by the holder of the case of the particular credential opened to provide a novel casing for holding a plurality of such credentials with combined means for holding such credentials and indicating quickly and reliably which is which. These and other objects of invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the novel parts, articles, arrangements, constructions and improvements herein shown and described.

The accompanying drawings referred to herein and constituting a part, illustrate an embodiment of the invention and serve to illustrate the principles thereof.

Of the drawings :-Figure lshows the casing open, showing the holding and inclicating devices; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing holding and indicating devices for a different organization; Fig. 3 shows a credential card held within the casing and the prefered manner for holding same. Fig. 4: shows a casing for holding a plurality of suchcredential cards; Fig. 5 is a View looking at Fig. 4 from the top; Fig. 6 is a section on line A13 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a central transverse section through the case when closed; and Fig. 8 is a detail of the fastening device.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, preferably of metal, and usually of silver or gold, "a casing is shown having two flat members or sides 1 and 2 constituting the outer walls of the casing. Said flat members are hinged together at their edges 3, whereby they may be closed together and opened apart. At the outer edges of the flat members 1 or 2 but preferably of both of them, are provided rims 4:, which rims project laterally in the direction of the inside faces of said flat members when closed together, as shown best in Fig. 7, whereby the flat casing members 1 and 2 are spaced apart when so closed together to make room for the credential card or sheet within the casing while completely inclosing it at the edges as well as the sides or faces. At-the corresponding edges, 5 and '6, of the flat members 1 and 2, that is the edges which are adjacent to said hinged together edges 3 at the same end of said hinged together edges are provided holding devices 7 and 8 for holding the credential sheet in place within the casing. These holding devices are also formed and used to indicate the order or society to which the credential appertains in a manner which will be more fully described hereinafter. These holding devices project inwardly from the edge and are spaced away from the inside face of the fiat members 1 or 2 to permit the credential sheet or card to he slipped underneath and be held between the holding device and the inside face of the flat 1nembers, as shown best in Figs. 3 and 8. Similar holding devices 9 and 10 are arranged along the edges 11 and 12 of said flat members 1 and 2 which edges 11 and 12 are opposite the hinged together edge 3, said holding devices also projecting inwardly and being spaced away from the inside faces of said flat members in the manner and for the purpose already described.

In accordance with one feature of the in vention there are no holding devices on the other edges 13 and 14 of the flat members 1 and 2. These are the opposite corresponding edges to the edges 5 and 6, that is, those adjoining the hinged together edges 3 on the opposite end from the edges 5 and 6. The credential card may be of a width equal to the distance between the edges opposite the hinged together edges when the case is open. The sheet a may he slipped in at the edges 18 and 14, or the free edges as they may be conveniently termed, and abut against the edges 7 and 8. The sheet a may be nearly twice as long as the width of the case, and be folded along the line in just within the limits of the casing members 1 and 2, the protruding part 0' being folded back upon the portion 5 beneath the holding devices. The credential sheet will be folded again at g, along the line of the hinged edge 3, folding here when the casing is closed or opened. The casing thus may be of a size equal to only about one fourth that of the credential card when open. To make room for the folded over portions of the credential card, the inwardly projecting portions of the holding members are spaced from the corresponding face of the casing members only a portion of the height of the inwardly projecting rim, and thus at the same time permitting the casing to close completely and securely. For a convenient and compact structure also, the holding devices may be attached directly to the rim. The structure and arrangement just described is clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.

Where the casing is to hold a plurality of credential cards, there is arranged between the outer casing members 1 and 2 one or more intermediate flat members of somewhat less size than said outer members so that such intermediate members may be completely inclo-sed within the casing when closed. Such an intermediate member 18 is shown in Figs. 4: and 5 of the drawings, having one edge hinged together at 3, with the hinged edges of the members 1 and 2, said intermediate member is provided in each of its faces with holding devices, 19, 21, 22, and 23, and on two edges of each face, whereby one credential card may be carried between one face of said intermediate member 18 and the adjacent inside face of the outer flat casing member 1 or 2, and another credential card may be similarly carried between the opposite side of said intermediate member 18 and the inside face of the other of said outside casing members 1 and 2, which is adjacent to said other face of the intermediate members.

As heretofore stated, the holding devices are formed to constitute also indicating de vices to indicate the society or order to which the credential belongs. This is especially useful where the case is used to carry more than one credential as it enables the holder to quickly and accurately turn to and present the particular credential he desires to use to be admitted in the particular time. Such means enables him to do this not only quickly but in a place or position where there would be insufficient light to read the printed matter on the face of the credential, or where he wishes to determine which is the proper credential to present without subjecting the other credentials to the observation of others, or without disclosing to others the fact that he possesses credentials to other societies or orders. Said holding and indicating means may be made in the form of the emblem of the particular order or society is to hold thereby, and are so shown in the drawings.

Fastening means for holding the case closed are provided. When the case has the intermediate members said fastening means is constructed and arranged to permit either side of said intermediate members to be opened at will while leaving the other side thereof closed. The embodied form of such means comprises a clasp member 25 extending from the edge of said intermediate member and clasping or bearing against the edge 11 of the flat member 1, and a similar clasping member 27 bearing against the edge 12 of the flat casing member 2. By placing the thumb nail against the proper clasping member the casing may be opened on either side as desired. a

It will be understood thatthe invention is not limited to the precise constructions shown and described but that these may be varied from within the scope of the accompanying claims.

What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A credential holder including in combi: nation a casing of rigid material comprising two flat members hinged together at one of 7 their edges, whereby they may be closed together and opened apart, a rim formed on the other edges of said two flat members and projecting laterally in the direction of the inside faces of said fiat members, whereby said members are spaced apart when so closed together, and holding devices along two corresponding edges of said flat members adjoining said hinged together edges, and on the same face of said members as said rim, and holding devices along the edge of each of said flat members which is opposite said hinged together edges, also on the same face of said flat members as said rim, said holding devices being spaced away from the inner surface of said flat members a less distance than the height of said rim, whereby the credential sheet may be slipped beneath said holding devices andbe folded back on itself within said rim at the edges of the casing which do not have the holding devices and said folded over portion may lie within the space outside the holding devices when the rims rest upon each other when said two flat members are closed together.

2. A card-case for the foldable arrangeing, a pair of hinge-sections, side-walls bounding the periphery of each section, holding devices secured to said side-walls of each section and spaced above the body of each section but below the marginal edges of said side-walls, thus providing a space between said holding devices when said sections are closed together for the reception of the bulk of a folded card or the like adapted to be retained in connection with said sections 10 by said holding devices.
