WORK-HOLDING LAP-BOARD.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VIRGIL M. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful W'ork-I-Iolding Lap-Board, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce an apparatus readily foldable into compact shape, for the convenient handling, in the lap, of work such as sewing, embroidery, and the like.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in a completely extended condition; Fig. 2 a side elevation; Fig. 3 a plan; Fig. 4. a side elevation of the device when cola slight modification; Fig. 6 a fragmentary section of the joint between the two leaves of the lap-board; Fig. 7 a fragmentary section of one end of the primary leaf of the lap-board; Fig. 8 a horizontal fragmentary section of the movable edge wall and adjacent parts; and Fig. 9 a detail of the connection between the leg members.

In the drawings, 10 indicates the board or leaf which forms the primary member of the lap-board. This leaf may be formed of a single sheet of metal with the ends 11 upturned to form end boards, as indicated in Fi 8, or may be provided with separate attac ied end bars 11 of wood, asshown in Fig. 5. One edge of board 10 is underturned at 12 to receive a pivot 13 carried on the under face of the adjacent edge of board 10 so as to be thus held against further turning movement on the pivot.

Secured to end bars 11 are hinges 15 the leaves 15 of which may be swung down against the end of bars 11, (or 11) so as to be stiffened thereby, being held in that position by spring clips 16. Secured to the two hinge leaves 15 are the ends of a U shaped frame 17 to which three sides of the upper open end of a bag 18 may be secured, the other side of said bag being attached to a rod 19 carried by the under face of the adjacent edge of board 10.

The bag 18 may be formed with internal pockets 20, for the reception of articles of various sizes and kinds, and frame 17 may carry one or more books 21 which are proj eoted into the interior of bag 18 in order to detachably receive articles 22 such as needle- Specification of Letters Patent.

Vith the apparatus in its extended position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, bar 31 may be slightly drawn toward the user so as to withdraw the fingers 35, whereupon the bar may be swung upward and away from the user to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Bar 81 may be padded in its under face if desired. By this arrangement the entire upper surface of the two boards 10 and 14: become available as a work holder or cutting table, the surplus material of the work being caught within the bag 18. \Vhen a smaller working surface is desired the board 14 may be swung beneath board 10 and bar 31 brought back to its normal position so that board 10 with its three sides becomes a tray which will retain material placed upon it. By pivoting the legs 22 to the yoke 17, there is sufficient freedom to permit the use of the device when the user sits in a rocking chair. This arrangement also facilitates a compact folding of the apparatus.

The entire structure may be folded into very compact shape by first swinging board 1 L upon board 10, then swinging the two boards upon the hinges 15 over upon yoke 17 where they will be retained by a spring catch 45 carried by the yoke 17 attached to engage bar 31 or the adjacent edge of board 10. Leg ends 23 may then be withdrawn from the legs 22, said legs 22 being then swung upward adjacent the side arms of the U-shaped yoke 17 and the leg ends then laid at right angles to the legs 22 and the bag collapsed as shown in Fig. 4:.

I claim as my invention:

1. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line therewith, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, end bars erected at the ends of said main leaf, an edge bar extending between the end bars, arms carrying said edge bar and extending partially across the main leaf and pivotally attached to the end bars, and means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf.

2. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line therewith, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, and means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf.

3. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line therewith, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, end bars erected at the ends of said main leaf, an edge bar extending between the end bars, arms carrying said edge bar and extending partially across the main leaf and pivotally attached to the end bars, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the main leaf to a position in substantial alinement therewith, means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement with the main leaf, a cord secured at one end of the main leaf and of sufiicient length to pass from thence around the body of the user to the opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf, and means arranged at said opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf to which the free end of the cord may be attached.

A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line there with, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, end bars erected at the ends of said main leaf, an edge bar extending between the end bars, arms carrying said edge bar and extending partially across the main leaf and pivotallv attached to the end bars, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the main leaf to a position in substantial alinement therewith, and means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement With the main leaf.

5. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line therewith, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the main leaf to a position in substantial alinement therewith, means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement with the main leaf, a cord secured at one end of the main leaf and of sufficient length to pass from thence around the body of the user to the opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf, and means arranged at said opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf to which the free end of the cord may be attached.

6. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line therewith, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the main leaf to a position in substantial alinement therewith, and means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement with the main leaf.

7. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, end bars erected at the ends of said main leaf, an edge bar extending between the end bars, arms carrying said edge bar and extending partially across the main leaf and pivotally attached to the end bars, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the .main leaf to a position in substantial alinement therewith, means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement with the main leaf, a cord secured at one end of the main leaf and of sufficient length to pass from thence around the body of the user to the opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf, means arranged at said opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf to which the free end of the cord may be attached, and supporting legs pivotally carried by the unhinged edge of the bag holding yoke.

8. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, end bars erected at the ends of said main leaf, an edge bar extending between the end bars, arms carrying said edge bar and extending partially across the main leaf and pivotally attached to the end bars, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main -leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the main leaf to a position in substantial alinement therewith, means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement with the main leaf, and supporting legs pivotally carried by the unhinged edge of the bag holding yoke.

9. A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line therewith, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the main leaf to a position in substantial alinement therewith, means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement with the main leaf, a cord secured at one end of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the main leaf and of suflicient length to pass from thence around the body of the user to the opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf, means arranged at said opposite free corner of the supplemental leaf to which the free end of the cord may be attached, and supporting legs pivotally carried by the unhinged edge of the bag holding yoke.

A lap-board comprising a main board or leaf, a yoke hinged to one edge of said main leaf to swing thereover or in line there with, a work holding bag suspended from said yoke, means for limiting the swing of the bag yoke relative to the main leaf, a supplemental leaf pivoted to the opposite edge of the main leaf so that it may be swung from a position beneath the main leaf to a position in substantial alinement there with, means for holding said supplemental leaf in substantial alinement with the main leaf, and supporting legs pivotally carried by the unhinged edge of the bag holding yoke.

11. A lap-board comprising a main leaf, a yoke hinged at its ends to one edge of the main leaf to swing thereover or in line therewith, means for limiting the swing of the yoke upon the main leaf to maintain the yoke projected from the main leaf, a spring clip carried by one of said members and arranged to engage the other when the yoke is projected from the main leaf, and a work holding bag suspended from said yoke.

12. In combination, a lapboard composed of a plurality of leaves which may be folded either in line with or on top of each other, a work-holding bag, and a yoke for supporting said work-holding bag, said yoke being hinged to the lapboard so the latter may be swung over the work-holding bag to serve as a cover therefor.

13. In combination, a lapboard, a workholding bag, and a yoke for supporting said work-holding bag, said yoke being hinged to the lapboard so the latter may be swung over the work-holding bag to serve as a cover therefor.
