HW- i y :MPRovEMENT nv SHUT'ii'riR-wonxnns.
The Schedulereferred to'in these Letters Patent and making part of. the same.
To all whom it iiiaycoiwcrn:
Be it known that I, Giconon L. DANFoRTn, of Lebanon, in the county' of Giafton and State ot' New -1-Iampsliire, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Apparatus for Opening'and Closing Window- -llinds, and retaining said blinds in any desired position; and I do hereby declare that the following is a Nfiill, clear, 'and exact description thereof, reference `boing had to the accompanying drawing, which fiirii'is a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and l Figure?. an edge view of a wiiidow-bliiid and portion of the inclesing window-casing with which my said apparatus is combined.
Artootliedwlieel, c, is combined witli thclowerend of the inner bar of a window-traine,a, by means of the angular strap l).
,l i Motion is imparted to the toothed wheel c and to the blind, with wliiehit is combined, by means ot'` :rn
operating shaft, al i, which passes through an aperture iii the side It ofthe wndow-easng, as shown in At the oiitercxposcd end of the operating shaft d i, an actuating screw-thread .projects therefrom, and passes into the spaces between the teeth of the toothed wheel c, which is combined with the window-blind."
.llie outer or exposed portion` ofthe actuating` shaft, from which radiates the screw-thread d, is ot' larger diameter than the portion tlicreot" which passes in- .wardly'through` the window-,casing 74. 'llic smaller portion, i, ot' said ,actuating shaft, has an ordinary screw-thread cut thereupon. A
A t-lininb-serewhf, works upon the portion t' of the actuating shaft, and a crank, g, `(or a knob)`is secured to the inner end of said shaft, Vto give the necessary leverage for operating the sanic.
Within the enlarged outer portion otl'fllieactnating shaft a washer, e, is placed, upon the `smaller portion,
i, of the same, and bears against the outer surface of the window-casing.
A similar washer, j, is also placed iipon the said portion of the` actuating shaft, and bears against the inner face of the window-casing, as shown infig. 2.
By turningthc thumb-screw f firmly down upon the washer j, the window-blind can be securely' held in an open or closed position,^or in any desired pari tially-open position. Before operating the blind, the tlinnib-screwf must be so reversed iii its position as to play loosely upon the actuating shaft.
It will be readily perceived that one advantage o my improved apparatus foropening and closin,r wiiidow-blinds and retaining them iii any desired open or closiulposition, consists in lits being readily adaptable to Vwindow-casings of different thicknesses. Another advantage consists in its capability of retaining window-blinds in any and every possible position to which they can be turned, from the slightest bowingof the blinds to an entire open or closed position.
When an actuating screw-shaft is combined with a window-blind and window-casing, substantially in the ina-nner and for the purpose herein set forth,
' l claim The combination of the set-screwf with said screwsbatt, furthe purpose of retaining tlie window-blind in' any desired open, partially open, or closed position, while it' also .enablestlic apparatus to be adapted to walls and casings of varying thickness, substantially as specified.
In testimony that the aforegoiog is a full and exact description of niy'iinprovement iii apparatus for opening and closing window-blinds and retaining-them in any desiredposition, I hei-cto subscribe my name. GEORGE L. DANFORTH. W'itncsscs V E. J. DURANT, F. A. CUsHMAN.
