Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
JABEZ F. LAWRENCE AND LUKE A. FARNSWORTH, OF CLAREMONT, NE\V HAMPSHIRE.
BLIND AND SHUTTER OPENER AND FASTENER.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 7,246, dated April 2, 1850.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that we, JABEZ F. LAWRENCE `being had to the accompanying drawings7 making a part of this specification.
Figure l, is a vertical section through a window frame Gr, showing an edge View of the window blindA H, thrown open, and the opening and closing apparatus as seen be yond.. Fig. 2, is a vertical section showing one side of the window frame and a portion of the blind placed therein, and also the opening and closing apparatus as seen from the outside; and Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the opening and closing apparatus.v
Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
Our opening, closing, and retaining apparatus is constructed as follows: A shank a, passes through the side of the window casing, having a knob A on its inner end, and the opener B, on its outer end; the opener B, is a block of metal of the shape represented in the drawings; to win-small and circular at the center, and gradually enlarging therefrom into the form of scrolls at each extremity placed in reversed positions; into the surface of which is cut a groove f, running spirally from the extremity of one of the scroll like terminations of B, to the otherV-as shown in the drawings.
C is a strong arm secured to and projecting from the outer side of the window frame- D is a lever secured to the window blind and connected to the arm C by means of the fulcrum pin i, as shown in Figs. l and 3; the short end e, of the lever D, is of such a shape as to fit accurately into the groove f, in the opener B. The opener B is of such a shape that as it is turned the short end e, of the lever D, will work freely in the groove f, from one end to the other, and thereby turn the lever upon its fulcrurn and the blind upon its hinges. Consequently, by taking hold of the knob A, and turning it, the blind may be opened and closed at pleasure. When the blind is open or closed, it cannot be moved without turning the -opener B, and consequently the apparatus not only serves to aid in opening and closing the blind from the inside of the house, but also to retain'the blind when it is open or closed.
The apparatus is also of such a form that it can be almost entirely covered by a protecting casing J, as represented in Fig. 4.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The opening and closing of window blinds and retaining them when open or closed,.by means of the rotary opener B, (which is circular at its center and gradually enlarges into scroll shaped extremities, having a groove f, in its surface extending spirally from one of its scroll-shaped terminations to the other,) combined with the arm C, secured to the window casing, and the lever D, made fast to the blind, substan tially in the manner herein set forth.
-The above specification signed and wit nessed this twenty-irst day of February, 1850.
JABEZ F. LAWRENCE. LUKE A. FARNSWORTH.
