Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMAN F. MER- WIN and GEORGE W. MERWIN, citizens of the United States, residing at High Falls, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shade-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
The .general object of the invention is to eliminate the employment of screws, tacks, and analogous fastening devices, which are generally used for securing shade brackets to window frames, by providing a shade holder adapted to be readily clamped to the window frame and further adapted not to unnecessarily abrade or mar the same, and still further adapted to engage with the window frame only when in a horizontal position, whereby, the trouble always incident to securing the brackets with screws, the presence of unsightly openings left by screws and the like when the brackets are removed, and the care required to properly aline the brackets to prevent sagging of the shade, are all overcome.

a indicates an extensible supporting bar the sections 6 and c of which are formed of U-shaped pieces of wire indicated by 5 and 6 and connected at one end as indicated by 7. The sides of the pieces 5 pass through guides 8 which are suitably connected to clamp straps 9. The sides of the pieces 6 extend between straps 9 and straps 10 and the said straps 9 and 10 serve to clamp the pieces 6 when drawn together through the cooperation of the bolts and nuts 11. By rendering the supporting bar a adjustable or extensible it may be readily adapted to the various widths of window frames.
In order to detachably connect the supporting bar to a window frame such as shown at d, we provide a jaw member 12 which is adjustably secured to one of the pieces 6 by means of a rigid cleat 13 and a cleat 14 which is adapted to be secured by means of a bolt and nut 15 so as to cooperate with the jaw member to clamp the piece 5 therebetween. 16 indicate teeth on the jaw member 12 which bite into the side of the frame d and are caused to do so by a cam lever 17 moving the jaw 18 into engagement with the opposite side of the frame 03. The cam lever 17 is pivoted on a plate 19 to which the jaw 18 is slidingly fitted, the plate in turn being connected to the other of the pieces 6 by cleat-s 20 and 21 one of which cooperates with the plate to clamp the section 6 therebetween when tightened by means of a bolt and nut 22.
The shade brackets 28 and 2 1 are adapted to receive the opposite ends of the shade roller and are adjustably secured to the pieces 5. In the present instance each shade bracket is shown as having a cleat 26 which extends across the piece 5 and which, when tightened by means of a screw and nut 25, secures the bracket in any of its adjusted posit-ions. Thus, it will be seen that the brackets may be adjusted independently of the supporting bar and the latter may be adjusted independently of the shade brackets, whereby the device may be used with windows and shades regardless of their relative widths.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be apparent that the supporting bar of my improved shade holder comprises inner and outer parallel members which are held in relatively spaced relation, and each of which comprises sections connected together in a manner to permit the length of the bar to be increased or decreased. It should also be apparent that the means for securing the member sections in adjusted positions secure the members in spaced relation at points intermediate their length, that the means for securing the supporting bar in applied position is carried by the inner member, and that the shade brackets are carried by the outer member.
What we claim as new is:
