Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY TERRY, 0F WATERBURI'CONNCTIOUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CHAMBER PAILS To all Awhom tt may concern: y
Beit known that I, HENRY TERRY, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Earth-Chamber Pail; and I declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Y Figure 1 is a Vplan of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, taken in the plane of the line A A, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in the plane of the line B B, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a planof the invention with the seat in its place. l Fig. 5 is an outside elevation', showing the seat in its place.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a portable, economical, and convenient nightchair or chamber for use within doors or elsewhere; and it consists in a chamber whose top is provided with an annular seat` and in whose sides or interior, below the seat, is provided a receptacle or receptacles for containing earth or other suitable deodorizing material, so arranged that the earth can be discharged upon the fecal contents ofthe chamber by the person using it.
In this example of my invention I have constructed the chamber of a cylindrical form; but it may be of any desired form and shape, and its size is such as to render it portable and easily moved when intended for house use.
The letter A designates the cham ber or pail,
and B its seat, which may be made plain, as
is shown in the drawings, or with a vchair back and arms, for the use-of invalids. l
`The seat `B is removable, and consists of an y f `annular rim, grooved on its under side to tit y over the edge ofthe chamber or pail.
When the utensil is to be emptied the seat can be taken off meanwhile. If desired, the .i seat may be provided with a hinged cover, to
shut over it and conceal its character when not in actual use.
In the interior of the chamber, below the seat, `I provide an earth-shelf, G, extending across the rear portion of the utensil, lits straight edge being supported by a rod, D, which goes through and turns in the sides 4of the utensil, the rod being rigidly attached to the shelf', and one end ot'V the rod being bent on the outside, so as to form a handle, E, by Y means of which a person can move the shelf and cause its contents to be emptied out upon the rubbish in the chamber, so as to cover and deodorize it before the occupant leaves the seat. y
The circular edge ofthe shelf is prevented from falling down by suitable supports arranged on the inner side or wall of the chamber. v
ln Fig.- 3 the shelf is shown both in its horizontal position and in an inclined position, as
houses, independent of any inclosing case or box.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. VThe arrangement, below the top of a portable pail or chamber, A, of a receptacle, C, for earth or other deodorizing material, so con structed as to hold the material and afterward discharge it into said portable pail, substantially as and for the purpose described'.`
2. A portable chamber or pail, having a movable seat, B, yand a shelf for earth or other deodorizing material, so constructed as to discharge thematerial into the pail, substantially as described."
l HENRY TERRY. Witnesses:
