To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Em'rir N. LANGGUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a table, and, more particularly, to a table for domestic or kitchen use providing for the convenient and ready disposal of garbage and other wastes formed in the preparation of food. In the usual arrangement of kitchen ap paratus and utensils, the pail for the reception of garbage is placed on the floor, frequently in a position not very accessible to a person working at the table. This involves considerable inconvenience, inasmuch as it requires the frequent stooping to uncover the pail and place the garbage therein, as well as rendering the kitchen more crowded and unsightly, which is particularly objectionable in small apartment kitchens.

These disadvantages and inconveniences are obviated by my present invention, one

object of which is to provide a table adapted to hold a garbage pail or similar receptacle in a convenient position to receive wastes from the table while maintaining the pail normally covered and out of the way.

Another object of the invention is to provide a table structure in which a garbage pail and other receptacles for the receipt of waste materials'are positioned with a maximum economy of space.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a means by which a pail or receptacle may be removably mounted under a table, normally sealed from the atmosphere,

and arranged to receive material directly from the table top,

and to provide a receptacle that may be kept in a sanitary, inodorous, condition.

With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the apparatus described and set forth in the following specification and claims.

The various features of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;

In my present invention, a garbage pail or receptacle is mounted immediately under the top of a table and an opening is formed in the table through which refuse or waste particles formed in the preparation of food on the table top may be swept into the pail, this opening being normally closed by a lid, the upper surface of which lies even with the top of the table when in place to close the opening. The pail is supported on a plate supported and spaced from the table top bymeans of a number of posts in such a manner that the pail may be readily placed thereon and removed therefrom. This plate may be supported on a pedestal which may thus serve to support the table top. The pail or receptacle is preferably formed with a rounded bottom so that it may be readily cleaned, and the table lid preferably carries, in a receptacle in its under surface, a deodorant or antiseptic to prevent or inhibit thefermentation of the refuse in the pail. This pail is preferably so supported that its upper edge rests tightly'or closely against the under surface of the table top to close the interior of the pail from the atmosphere, the contents of the pail being exposed only when the pail is removed for emptying, or when the table lid is lifted to sweep refuse into the pail.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, a table top 10 is provided with an opening 12, preferably placed near one end, through which refuse or waste materials formed on the table may be swept into a pail or receptacle 14 positioned immediately under the top of the table below the opening 12. The on a plate 16, which is spaced and supported from the table top 10 by means of a number of posts 18, three posts being shown in the embodiment illustrated by way of example. The posts 18 are of such a length that the space between the top of the plate 16 and the under surface of the table top 10 is 'ust sufficient to receive the pail 12 and hol the upper edge of the pail closely against the under surface of the table top. The plate 16 is recessed as at 20 in such a manner that its rear edge fits the rear edge of the pail when the pail is pushed back on the plate so that the pail will stop at its proper position under the opening 12 and the front portion of the recess is open so that the pail may be readily inserted onto and removed from the plate.

The opening 12 is formed with beveled edges and is provided with a cover or lid 22 having beveled edges that closely fit those of the opening 12 so that, when the lid is in place in the opening, a tight, odor proof, closure is provided. The upper surface of the lid is rooved in any suitable manner, as indicated at 24, to form a handle or knob by which it may be lifted, the lid being so pro portioned, however, that its upper surface lies even with that of the table top so that, when in place in the opening 12, it forms a part of the table top. To prevent or hinder the formation of oflensii e odors in the garbage pail, or in some cases, to disinfect the contents of this receptacle, a recess 26 may be formed in the under surface of the lid 22 in which a disinfectant, absorbent, or deodorant may be placed and retained in position by means of a retaining screen 28. To enable the screen 28 to be removed and replaced, it is preferabl 1 retained by means of a cut ring 30 sprung into an internal, annular groove 32 at the edge of the receptacle, so that, upon being removed, the screen 28 may be removed. To enable the end of this ,ring to be more readily grasped and removed, one end is beveled or cut away as at 34.

Any suitable form of pail or receptacle may e used and may be of such a size as to hold the required accumulation of material. In the interests of cleanliness and neatness, it is, however, preferred to use a type of pail that may be readily and completely cleaned when emptied and which does not afford any corners from which the material does not readily fall or to which it tends to cling. For this purpose, the pail is provided with a rounded bottom 36 and is supported and held in upright position by means of a ring or downwardly extending flange 38 surrounding the rounded bottom.

The diameter of this flange 38 is the same,

as that of the Walls of the pail so that a cover 40 for the pail may be placed in inverted position under the flange 38 when the pail is placed on the plate 16 and thus leave the pail open to the opening 12. The pail is also provided with a pair of handles 42 to enable it to be readily positioned on and removed from the plate 16.

The table top 10 may be supported in whole or in part, depending on its size and form, from the plate 16. To this end, the bottom of the plate 16 is mounted on a pedestal 44 having a widened base 46 to give it greater stability. The pedestal may be elongated or shortened to raise or lower the height of the table top. For this purpose, the pedestal is formed with a hollow lower portion or element 48, mounted directly on the base 46, and an upper member 50 telescoping into the lower element and held in position by means of a set screw or thumb screw 52. For the convenience of the person working at the table, a .seat 54 may be mounted on the pedestal by means of a swinging bracket 56 resting on the lower element 48 and swinging on the upper element 50 so that when not in use, the seat may be swung under the table.

A basket 58, of screen or other suitable material, is also mounted under the table at one side of the pail 14 to receive papers and such things as should not be put into the receptacle 14. This basket is provided at its upper edge with sidewise extending flanges 60 which are slidably supported in grooved slides 62, one at each side, mounted on the under surface of the table top. lVhen anything is to be placed in the hasket, the basket is partly withdrawn by means of a handle 64 on its front face, and for emptying, the basket may be completely withdrawn. With this arrangement, there is less tendency for filling the receptacle 22 with material that it is not intended tore- CelVG.

Other accessories, such as a towel rack 66 may also be mounted on the table top as desired. It will be understood that the table may be constructed of any suitable material adapted to the purposes for which the table is to be used.

The above invention therefore provides a convenient arrangement of the waste receiving receptacles which is very economical of space, inasmuch as it utilizes space that would not ordinarily be used for other purposes. These receptacles are, moreover, disposed in such a manner that their presence is unobjectionable and their use does not involve any of the disagreeable features accompanying the use of the usual type of garbage or waste receiving apparatus.

As changes of construction could be made Within the scope of my invention, it is desired that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. Apparatus of the type described which. comprises, a pedestal, a plate mounted on said pedestal, guides on the upper surface of said plate to receive a pail, posts mounted on said plate and spaced from each other to permit the placing of a pail on said plate, a table top mounted on said posts with its lower surface closing the upper edge ofsaid pail, said table top having an opening into said pail, and a closure for said opening having its upper surface even with the upper surface of said table top.

2. Apparatus of the type described which comprises, a table top, a pail, a fixed guiding and supporting plate for said pail, means for holding said top and said plate spaced to receive said pail therebetween with the edge of said pail tight against the under surface of said top, said top having an open- 7 ing into said pail, the edge of said opening lying within the periphery of the upper edge of said pail when in position on said plate, said pail being slidable from between said plate and table top, and a cover for said opening lying flush with the upper surface of said top.
