UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

DISPL AY-BOX.
To all whom 2'1- may concern Be it knownl that I, Anriuni Il. CitixksHAiv, a citizen of the United States. residing at Lyndhurst, in the county ot Bergen and State otl New Jersey, have invented new` Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled November 25, 1912. Serial No. 733,405.
better appearance and in order that the ar- I ticles may be maintained in the best possible condition. f
The object. of the present invention is to provide an extremely simple and dinexpen- 1 breaking or removing the retaining means. I
Briefly and generally stated thc invention comprises av display box having anarticle ends oitA tbc parallel cuts or incisions 6 in orretaining Strap therein, said strap being cut out of the inateri'al forming the bottom wall ofirthe box and when in its article-receiving l position, the strap is elevated above the plane l of the box bottoni.
In the illustrated embodiment ot' the invention, l have shown a box especially dcsigned to receive a fourin-hand necktie; but this showing is only illustrative and not employed in 'a restrictive sense, it being perfectly apparent/*that the linvention may be applied'to boxes of other shapes or `designs and for receiving and retaining other arti' cles of merchandise.
' In order to enable others skilled in the art to niake and use my said invention, l will now proceed to describe the saine in detail, reference being made for this purpose to the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 i'sfa perspective view ot' a box .made according to the invention. Fig. 2 is ,ii/vertical longitudinal central section ot' the saine. A Fig. 3 is'atransverse vertical section Patented Feb. 1 8, 1913.-
takeii through the article retaining strap. Fig. 4, is a bottoni plan view of the blank from which the box is formed.
Referring to the drawing, apd inore particularly to Fig. el thereof, which represents a bottoni plan view of a cardboard or other blank troni which the box with its article retaining strap is formed, the reference nuincral 1Y designates thc body portion of the blank, which body portion constitutes the bottoni oi. the box when the blank is folded up in box torni. The said body portion is provided on opposite sides with integrally toi-ined side wings and at its opposite ends with integrally formed end wings 3, the said side and end wings constituting respectively the side and end walls of the finished box. `ln ordcr to facilitate thc formation ot' the. box 'troni the blank shown, said blank is scored or creased longitudinally along the lines fl and transversely along the linesi.
ln order to torni, as an integral part of thc box, :i retaining strap `t'or holding articles ot incrchaiulise within thc box, l cut or incise thc blank transversely along the parallel lines ti. ti, said cuts or incisions extending for a short distance into the side wings '.2 to providc the retaining strap 7, the length ol which is .slightly greater than the width ol thc box. l prc'tcr to provide lilies of scoring or crcascs in the side wings L) joining the der to 'facilitate upward bending of the retaining strap. i
I'laving provided the blank as just described, the side and end wings are folded `up at right angles to the body portion of bottom of the box, as clearly shown in,.Figs.
l, i2 end ot the drawing, this being due to the fact that the retaining stra i isA longer than the width of the finished box, and inasmuch as tfhe opposite ends ofthe strap are joined integrally with the sid() Walls ot the box along lines slightly above the `plane ot the bottoni ot' the box, the 'said I In order to close th strap will be maintained -in elevated 'posiof said wall, and having its ends joined intion to receive the article to be retained within'tlie box. Inasniuclti as the retaining strap is formed as an integral part of the blank from which the nox is formed, (the `strap being cut from the material constituting tlie bottom and parts of the side Walls of the box), When the strap is,elevated or bulged upwardly, as herein shown and described, an opening 9 will be .left in the bottom of the box, said opening constituting the space formerly occupied by the strap.
cover the exterior walls ofthe box with a suitable covering blankas 8 said blank extending over the opening 9, and the marginal edges of the covering blank being turned .over the upper edges of the box and affixed to -the inner Walls thereof,'in the usual Way. If desired,7and in order to lend additional strength to thatA part of the bottom of the box having the opening 9,
and to avoid accidental rupture of the covering blank where it overlies the said is opening, I prefer to opening 9., I prefecto provide the box vvithl a false bottom consisting of a loose strip` of cardboard l0, said strip lying flat upon the bottom wall otthe box and extending under the strap 7 and overlying the openving 9. As these boxes are especially adapt- ,.ed for holding gift articles for the holiday season, I contemplate utilizing the face of the retaining'strap 7 as the card of the donor of the gift, and to this end I propose to print or delineate upon the face of the strap a suitable greeting or expression appropriate to the occasion, as well as a suitable design appropriate to 'the season, leaving a space in which may be Written the naine of the donor.
It will be seen lfrom the foregoing'that -tlie article retaining strap is formed as ple in construction and cheap to manufaci...
ture.
. Obviously the boxes may be of any size or shape and it is also obvious that the retaining strap may be, of anyA Width and more than one strap may be employed if desired.
vl. A display box having an article retaining strap therein, said strap being cut from and formed integra-1 with the material of the box and elevated from end to end abo've the plane of the bottom of the box.
2. A display box having an article retaining strap therein, said strap being cut out of the bottom wall of the box and elei i i i i' i i vtuting the retaining strap.\
the said opening.
above the plane of the bottom of the box.
4. A display box having an integrally formedv article retaining .strap therein, said strap being cut out of the bottom Wallof the box and elevated upon the plane thereof leaving an opening in said Wall, and a covn eringfor the box walls extending over and closing. said opening.
5. A display box 'having an integrally formed article retaining' strap therein, said strap being cut put o' the bottom and two opposed Side walls' of' the box and elevated above the plane of the bottom leaving' an opening in said walls, and a covering extending over the exterior walls of the box and closing said opening. 1
6. A display box having an integrally formed article-retaining strap therein, said box and stra being formed from a single blank comprising a 'body portion having integral side, and rend wings, and said body portion having parallel incisions extending entirely across the same, the material lso between said incisions being elevated vabove the plane of the body poition and consti- 7. A display box having formed article retaining strap tlierein, said box and strap being formed from a single blank comprising a body portion liaving integral side and end Wings, and parallel ii'icisions'extending .entirely across the vbody `portion and into the said side wings, the
material of the blank between said incisionsl being elevated above the plane of the' body portion and constituting the retaining strap.
8. A display box having an integrally Vformed article retaining/strap therein, said strap being cut out ot tlfebottoinand two opposite lsfide walls of the box and elevated above the plane ot' the body portion leaving an opening in vsaid walls, a covering extend' ing over the exterior falls of tliebox, and closing said opening, and an insertible and ren'iovable strip wiiliinwt'lie box overlying In testimony whereof I haveliereunto set my hand in presence oi two subscribing witnesses.
