To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES WV. SCHLEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vellston, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in envelops in general, and relates particularly to that class known as safety envelops -which cannot be surreptitiously opened or will be extremely simple in its construction,

strong, durable, effectual in its operation and inexpensive to manufacture; inasmuch as it can be manufactured easily as an ordinary envelop. Y

lViththe above objects in View, and others which will be more apparent as the nature of the invention progresses, the improvements reside in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully de scribed and claimed.

In the drawings, accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of my improvement, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the envelop is constructed. Fig. 2 is a view illustrating one of the side flaps folded over and connected with a second side flap of the envelop Fig. 3 is aview illustrating the bottom flap folded over and secured to the side flaps.

It is to be understood that my improved envelop may be constructed of any desired material from which an envelop can I be made, and that the envelop may be made in various sizes best suited for the purpose for which the envelop is to be employed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the front or body of the envelop. This body 1 is integrally formed with oppositely arranged side flaps 2 and 3, a bottom flap 4, and a sealing flap 5. All of the said flaps are divided from the body through the Specification of Letters Patent.

medium of the usual fold lines, and the side flapsQ and 3 have both their upperand lower edgesarranged parallel with and slightly below the longitudinal fold lines which separate the bottom flap 4 and the sealing flap 5 from the body. The side flaps 2 and 3 are preferably reduced at their upper portions and adjacent their extremities, and the said side flaps are each provided with a longitudinally extending slit or cut away portion designated by the numeral 6. These cut away portions 6, when the flaps-2 and 3 are folded one over the other and upon the body 1, register and the said slits or openings are adapted for a purpose which will presently be set forth. Each of the side flaps 2 and 3 is provided upon its upper edge with an extending locking tongue 7, and each of the said tongues have their outer faces gummed, for a purpose which will also presently be set forth. Une of the side flaps, preferably that designated by the numeral 2, is gummed, so that when the said flap 2 is folded over the flap 3, both of the flaps will be securely con- 80 nected together. The bottom flap 4 comprises preferably a substantially V-shaped vextension, the same being provided with a longitudinal slit or opening 8, and the said opening is adapted to register with the openings 6 of the side flaps 2 and 3 when the said bottom flap is folded over the side flaps. The bottom flap 4 has almost its entire inner face gummed, so that it may be securely connected to both of the side flaps when the said 9 bottom flap is folded upon the side flaps. The sealing flap 5 also comprises a member having its opposite edges inclined upwardly and toward each other from its connection with the body to provide a substantially V- shaped slot. The sealing flap 5 has its upper portion centrally provided with an extending tongue 9. The outer or opposite side edges of the said tongue are adapted to extend within the sealing flap 5. and in order 1 to accomplish this the said sealing flap is slitted as at 10 and 11. The portions of the sealing flap 5 adjacent the said slits 10 and 11 provide what may be termed laps 12 and 13, the said laps as well as the inner face of the sealing flap 5, adjacent its inclined edges is provided with a coating of gum, and the said flap directly above its fold line and ad jacent its opposite edges is slitted as at '14 and 15. The locking tongue 9 has its outer face gummed, and when the side fiaps are folded upon the body 1, and the bottom flap In sealing the envelop the tongues 7 are passed through the slits 14 and 15 of the sealing flap 5, and have their gummed faces secured to the outer face of the body portion -1 or are bent rearwardly and connected to the outer face of the sealing and side flaps respectively. Both of these methods have been found effectual in rendering the envelop thoroughly effectual. The envelop is further provided with a pair of spaced looking fingers 21, and these locking fingers are adapted to be folded within the envelop and have their gummed faces connected with the inner face of the body of the envelop.

It is to be understood that the gummed portions of the top or sealing flap includes or covers the portions of the said flap surrounding the slits thereof, and by this arrangement the said flap, when the fingers are turned inwardly of the envelop, the gum connecting the portion of the flap having the slits to the side flaps of the envelop prevent the insertion of a knife or other sharpened instrument through the said slits.

Having thus described the invention,what I claim is: b

An envelop comprising a body provided with end flaps having overlapping ortions formed with registering slots, a longitudinal connecting flap formed with a slot to register with the end flap slots and asealing flap having slits located near its end portions and a tongue centrally located thereon and adapted to be inserted in the registering en flap and longitudinal flap slots and sealed to the inner face of the innermost end flap and also provided with flaps located near said tongue and adapted to be sealed to the outermost end flap, said end flaps being each provided with lateral tongues located on their upper edge portions, one tongue of each end flap being insertible in the end slot of the sealing flap and adapted to be sealed to the outer side of the end flaps of the envelop and the other tongue of each end flap being adapted to be sealed against the inner face of the face Wall of the envelop.
