. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. RHOADES AND NATHAN P. SWANN, OF FLETCHER, OKLAHOMA. i
ENVELOP.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, HENRY H. RHoADEs and NATHAN I). SWANN, citizens of the United States, residing at Fletcher in the county of Comanche, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and we dohereby declare the following toV be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops and more particularly to that class known as safety envelops, which are designed with the purposey in view of preventing tampering with the ycontents of the envelop without detection.
The invention resides in a novel manner of folding the envelop blank and in providing tabs upon certain of the flaps, which tabs are gummed to permit of their being secured to some other portion of the envelop.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a tab of the character 'stated above which is adapted to be passed through a slit in the front of the envelop and to be secured through the medium of the gum thereon to the front face of the envelop at the upper right hand corner so that it will be completely concealed when the stamp is applied to the envelop.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an envelop constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same before the application of the stamp. Fig. 2 is a back view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the envelop in a line with the tab. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the envelop is formed.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the envelop is shown as comprising a front or body 10, flaps 11 and 12, which are formed integral with the longitudinal edges of the front, and end flaps 13 and 14, which are formed integral with the end edges of the frontor body. The flap 13 is gummed along its edges and upon its outer face and the flap 14 is gummed along its edges but upon its inner face, these two gummed portions being indicated by the numerals 15 and 16 respectively. The flap 11 is gummed as at 17, along that edge adjacent the end iiap 13, and

upon its inner face whereas the flap 12 is gummed as at 1S, along the corresponding edge and along a portion of its other edge as at 19. Formed through the blank at the line of fold of the flap 14, upon the front or body of the same, is a slit 2() through which is adapted to be inserted a tab 21 which is formed integral with the adjacent edge of the flap 12 and for a purpose t0 be presently made clear, this tab is gunnned at its outer edge as at 22.
In constructing the envelop from the blank, the end flap 13 is first folded over upon the back face of the front or body of the blank, and its gunnned portion having been moistened, the flap 11 is folded in a similar manner. The gummed portion of the Vil ap 12 is then inoistened and this [lap folded in the same manner as the other flaps. The end flap 14 is the last one to be folded over and before being so acted upon, the tab 21 is engaged through the slit 20 and secured to the front face of the body of the blank. After this has been done, the end fia 14 is folded over in the manner stated for t ie other flaps and the stamp is applied to the envelop in such a manner as to cover the tab.
Ihat is claimed is:
An envelop comprising a front or body portion, flaps extending from the longitudinal and end edges thereof, there being a slit formed through the blank in a line with the line of fold of one of the end flaps, and a gummed tab on one of the flaps of the longitudinal edges, said tab being adapted to be stuck through the aforesaid' slit, the flap at the end of the body opposite that through which the slit is formed being adapted to be folded over first, the )lain one of the longitudinal flaps next, the flap with the tab thereon next, and the remaining flap last, the tab being passed through the slit and bent over the adjacent end of the envelop and gummed to the face thereof.
In testimony whereof, we aflix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
