GARMENT-STIFFENER.

To alt whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROXANNA A. HAMP- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Stiffener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to wearing apparel, and its object is to provide a new and improved garment stiffener, more especially designed for stiffening the yokes of ladies dresses and waists, such as open along the back, and arranged for convenient insertion in the yokes and sufficiently pliable to readily conform to the shape of the wearer, with a view to give the desired stiffness to the yoke without rendering the garment uncomfortable to the wearer. For the purpose mentioned use is made of two stiffeners inserted in the back of the yoke at opposite sides of the back opening, each stiffener being made of spring wire bent to provide top and bottom bars connected with each other by corrugated end bars, of which one extends along the edge of the opening while the other extends along the shoulder seam.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stiffener as applied; and Fig. 2 is a face view of the same.

As illustrated in Fig. 1, two stiffeners A, A are used in the back of the yoke of a ladys dress or waist B on opposite sides of the back opening C. Each fastener A is preferably made from a single piece of spring wire bent to form top and bottom bars A, A and corrugated end bars A A, as plainly shown in the drawings. the edge of the back opening C, while the other end bar A is arranged along the shoulder seam of the garment B. The top and bottom bars A, A are preferably segmental and the top bar A extends along the collar while the bottom bar A extends from the outer end of the shoulder to the lower end of the end bar A Now by the arrangement described the yoke is properly stiffened, especially by having the end bars A and A corrugated, it being understood that the said end bars are pliable in a trans verse and sidewise direction so as to readily conform to the shape of the wearers body, at the same time giving the desired stiffness in the direction of the length of the said end bars.

It is understood that the stiffener is fastened to the, yoke by stitches or other fastening means, and the ends of the piece of wire forming the st-i fiener are fastened to gether by soldering or other suitable means.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

In a ladys dress or waist having an opening at the back, the combination with the yoke, of two stifieners inserted in the back of the yoke at o posite sides of the back opening, each sti ener being made of spring wire bent to form segmental top and bottom bars, and corrugated end bars connecting the top and bottom bars with each other, one of the said corrugated end bars extending along the edge of the back opening and the other extending along the shoulder seam of the garment.
