J ESSE ALFONSO BEAN, OF TEXARKANA, TEXAS.
COMBINED REIN-I-IOLDER- AND WHIP-SOCKET.
Application filed September 6, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jnssn A. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Texarkana, in the county of Bowie and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combined Rein Holder and Whip Socket, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combined rein holder and whip socket.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of combined rein holders and whip sockets, and to provide a simple, compact and inexpensive construction adapted to be readily secured at the edge of the dash board of a vehicle, and capable of holding the reins and a whip in convenient position for instant use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined rein holder and whip socket, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the rein holder.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the rein holder, which is constructed of suitable metal, comprises a lower body portion 1 and upper spaced jaws 2 formed integral with the lower body portion and diverging upwardly therefrom to form a downwardly tapered rein receiving space between them. The jaws 2 are provided at their inner rein engaging faces with longitudinal grooves or corrugations 3, forming roughened surfaces, adapted to engage the reins 3* to prevent the same from slipping. The ribs formed by the grooves or corrugations are rounded and do not present any sharp edges to the reins so as to avoid cutting, marriug or otherwise injuring the same. Instead of grooving or corrugating Specification of Letters Patent.

the inner faces of the jaws, any othersuitable means may be employed for securely gripping the reins.
The lower body portion 1 is provided at its inner edge with a longitudinal groove 4: curved transversely and adapted to fit the vertical side edge 5 of the dashboard 6, and the said body is recessed at the outer side at 7 forming upper and lower projecting portions 8 and 9, which are provided with transversely alined longitudinal grooves 10 and 11, also curved transversely to present concave faces to a cylindrical whip socket 12. By this construction, the body portion of the rein holder is compactly arranged be tween the whip socket and the dash board, and the parts are firmly held together by upper and lower clips or clamps 13.
The clamps 13, which are constructed of flexible or resilient metal, have circularouter portions to fit the cylindrical whip socket, and the metal is extended inwardly from the circular outer portion to provide spaced sides 14, which are secured to the rein holder and to the dash board by bolts 15 and 16. The vertical body portion of the rein holder is provided at its front and rear faces with upper and lower horizontal grooves 17 and 18, receiving the inner side portions of the upper and lower clamps and forming shoulders for engaging the upper and lower edges of the same. The inner spaced sides 13 of the clamps are seated in the horizontal grooves 17 and 18, and are arranged in flush relation with the front and rear faces of the body portion of the rein holder, and the bolts 1-5 pierce the spaced side portions of the clamps and pass through perforations 19 of the rein holder. The terminal portions of the spaced sides of the clamps extend beyond the rein holder and fit against the front and rear faces of the dash board and brace the same. The bolts 16 pierce the ends of the spaced side portions of the upper and lower clamps and the dash board 6 and securely fasten the combined rein holder and whip socket to the dash board. l/Vhen the bolts are tightened, the whip socket is firmly gripped in the outer circular portions of the clamps, and the interlocking of the spaced side portions of the rein holder effectually prevents the rein holder from slipping or twisting and enables the clamps to rigidly hold the whip socket and the rein holder in position at the side edge of the dash board.
The outer portions of the clamps encircle the Whip socket at the upper and intermediate portions thereof, and the whip socket is provided at the top with a projecting rounded bead 20, located at the upper end of the body and arranged to rest upon the upper projecting portion 8, which extends outwardly beyond the rein engaging jaws 2. By this construction, the whip socket is firmly seated against the rein holder and there is no liability of the said socket slipping downward between the clamps when the whip 21 ,is placed in the same.
In Fig. 3, I have indicated in dotted lines two holes which are intended to be used to pass screws through when it is desired to fasten the rein-holder to a fiat surface, as, for instance, the side of a buggy seat or carriage. When employed in this way, the extended ends of the clamps would not be made use of.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described including a whip socket, a rein holder comprising upper rein engaging jaws, and a lower body portion having its outer edge fitted against the inner side of the whip socket and having an inner edge arranged to fit against the side edge of a dash board, and upper and lower clamps embracing the whip socket and having spaced inner side portions extending across the front and rear faces of the body portion of therein holder and projecting inwardly beyond the same and having means for securing them to the dash board of a vehicle.
2. A device of the class described including a cylindrical whip socket, a rein holder comprising upper spaced jaws, and a lower body portion fitted at its outer edge against the whip socket and having a shoulder or seat for the same and provided at its front and rear faces with transverse grooves, and a clamp composed of an outer cylindrical portion embracing the whip socket, and spaced inner side portions secured in the transverse grooves of the rein holder and projecting inwardly beyond the same and having means for securing them to a dash board.
3. A device of the class described including a whip socket provided at the top wit-h a projecting port-ion, a rein holder comprising upper spaced jaws, and a lower body portion provided at its inner edge with a groove to fit the side edge of a dash board and having upper and lower projections at its outer edge provided with alined grooves to fit the whip socket, the upper projecting portion of the rein holder forming a shoulder or seat to receive the projecting portion of the whip socket, and clamps embracing the whip socket and the rein holder and having inwardly projecting attaching portions adapted to be secured to a dash board.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JESSE ALFONSO BEAN.
