BAND-FASTENER FOR CYLINDFHCAL TANKS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 759,255, dated May 10, 1904:.
Application filed February '7, 1903. Serial No. 142,301- (No model.)
To rtZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that we, lyiANION M. FERGUSON and Gaol-ion L. EAsoN, citizens of the United States, residing in Des Moines, county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Band -Fasteners for Cylindrical Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a band-fastener simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive in construction and which may be easily and quickly adjusted, attached-to or detached from the tank.
Our invention consists of certain details of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in our claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows in perspective the different parts of our device separated, but arranged in the order in which they would be connected; and Fig. 2 shows a portion of a tank on which is fitted our improved band-fastener, the bandfastener being shown in side elevation; and Fig. 3 shows a modified form of our device.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the reference-numeral is used to indicate a band containing two series of perforations 11 and 12, one series located centrally near each of its ends.
Numeral 13 indicates the lower clip we employ, being shaped so as to provide aflat longitudinal base, with two vertical flanges 1 1 and 15 extending upwardly, one from each longitudinal side, the space between said flanges being of a sufficient width to form a receptacle adapted to receive the band 10.
The numerals 16 and 17 indicate two longitudinal slots located one in the inner surface of each of the flanges let and 15, extending from its rear to a point near its center and designed to receive and retain the upper clip or Slide which We employ.
Located centrally in the base of the lower clip 13 is a lug 18, designed to be received by the perforations 11 or 12 in the ends of the band 10.
The numeral 19 indicates the upper clip, being shaped so as to provide a flat horizontal base projecting forwardly from an upwardlycxtendingvertical portion 20.
The nui'nerals 21 and 22 indicate lugs located at the base of and extending forwardly from each side of the vertical portion 20, said lugs being designed to be received by the slots 16 and 17.
The numeral 23 indicates a brace designed as the support for the vertical portion 20, and the numeral 2 1 indicates a perforation extending through the vertical portion, being designed. to receive a connecting-bolt 25.
In our modified form (shown in Fig. 3) the method of operation and the shape of the parts are the same, except that in place of the centrally-located lug 18 in the base of the lower clip 13 we use two lugs 27 and 28, one projecting inwardly from the inner surface of each of the vertical flanges 14 and 15, and the band 10 is provided on each longitudinal side near each of its ends with a series of recesses 29 and 30, said recesses being designed to engage the lugs 27 and 28.
As the upper and lower clips designed to fit on each end of the band and the method of operation in connecting them to the band. are precisely the same and as the band is provided with similar perforations on each of its ends, we have described but one set of clips.
In practical use one end of the band 10 is placed in the receptacle formed between the flanges 14: and 15 on the lower clip 13, one of the series of perforations fitting over and engaging the lug 18. The upper clip or slide 19 is then placed on top of the band 10 between the vertical flanges 14 and 15 and pushed forwardly, the lugs 21 and 22 passing into the longitudinal slots 16 and 17 until the ends of the lugs engage the ends of the slots. The other end of the band is fitted out in pre cisely the same way with a lower clip and an upper clip or slide, and a connecting-bolt is then passed through the perforations 2 1 in the vertical portions 20 of the upper clips 19 and a nut secured on its end.
It is obvious that in providing a series of perforations or recesses, as the case may be, in the ends of the band our device is capable of adjustment as to the band within the clips, as well as being adjustable by means of the connecting-bolt. Our device may also be manufactured in any size required for various widths of bands.
Having thus described our invention, what we now claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A band-fastener comprising in combination two lower clips, each being formed so as to contain a receptacle adapted to receive the end of a perforated band, a lug mounted in the base of each lower clip and designed to receive and engage a perforation in the band and designed as a means of providing for a lower clip being adjustable upon the band; two upper clips each being designed to lit over the band and to be secured to its companion lower clip; an adjustable bolt designed to connect the upper clips, all arranged and combined substantially as stated.
2. In a band-fastener, the combination of a band provided with two series of perforations located one near each of its ends; a lower clip provided with two vertical flanges, longitudinal slots located one on the inner surface of each of said flanges, lugs located in the base of said clip; an upper clip provided with an upwardly-extending vertical portion, a perforation extending transversely through said vertical portion, two lugs located one on each longitudinal side of, and extending forwardly on said vertical portion; a second lower clip and a second upper clip exactly similar in every respect to the lower and upper clip described, and designed as a companion coupling therewith; an adjusting connecting-bolt, all arranged and combined substantially as and for the purposes stated.
