IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,915, dated August 13, 13%; application lilvd J line 24, 1878.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK HIGGINS, of VVellsville, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Sockets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved whip-socket, and Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the whip in position.

Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to an improved whipsocket, the construction and operation of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth with reference to the drawings, in which- A is the top of my improved whip-socket, consisting of a ring, from which project in a downward direction two inwardly-curved side pieces, B 13, connected by cross-pieces G O, and provided with pins 1) b, or other suitable devices, for attachment to the dash-board of a vehicle. By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings the operation of my invention will be readily understood. \Vhen the butt of whip is inserted into the socket through the ring A at the top, it is, by the curx'ed side pieces B B, forced in an inward direction against the tension of the spring D, by which itis held securely in place without danger of being shaken out.

It will be observed that my improved whipsocket is formed or cast in one piece, thus securing strength, simplicity of construction, and cheapness.

I do not broadly claim the spring for holding the whip in the socket; but,

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The improved whip-socket herein described, consisting of the ring A, having the downwardly-projecting and inwardly-curved side pieces B B, and the spring D, provided with the plate 11, said spring extending downwardly to the longitudinal center of the side pieces B B, the whole being cast in one piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
