UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
a DANIEL M. BARR, F lHILADELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification 6: Letters latent.
PRESERVE-JAR.
T 0 all whom, it may concern 1 3e it known that I. DANIEL M. BARR, a citizen of. the United States. residing 1n the city andcounty of Philadelphia, State of which is adapted to be hermetically sealed,
and in which provision made for locking the cap of the jar to the body thereof in or-- der to prevent said cap fronrbeing displaced from said body by lateral blows or thrusts, the contiguous edges of said body and cap being 'adapted to be uniformly ground to produce an air tight 3omt thereof.
he invention satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying. drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to beunderstood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement "and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a portion of a preserve jar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan -view of the cap thereof. Fig; 3 represents a plan view of the body of the jar. Fi 4 represents a perspective view of the mem er employed for locking the ca on the body. Fig. 5 represents a section 0 the cap showing means for sealing the same. Figs. 6, 7 8 and 11 represent sections of portions of other embodiments of the invention. Figs. 9 and 10 represent other embodiments.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :A designates the body of a jar composed preferably of top edge of said neck being ground as at C.
'D designates a cap or cover having a dey I pending side rim or flangerE, and formed flange being ground as at F, said ground preferably of glass, the-lower edge of said edges contactingwhen the cap is in closed ofthc cap is the air position forming a ground joint for said any and cap, the same being air-tight and self sealing in its nature. In the top wall vent G which is preferably of inverted conical form, leaving a fine opening in the cap at the base of said vent for allowing air to exhaust from the body A, as has been practised heretofore in pre- 5 serving, which being accomplished, the vent G is tightly closed by a medium or material H such as wax, thus hermetically sealing the jar, but which medium or materialmay be displaced or removed to permit air to enter the body and destroy the vacuum therein, whereby the cap may be removed. 'As the lower edge of the cap lies flat on the upper edge of the neck of the body and the ground joint formed by the same retains the cap on its seat under ordinary circumstances, any side blow 'or pressure imparted to said cap is liableto displace the same and thus undev I PatentedDec.311912.

sirably open the jar. To prevent this, there is seated on the shoulder B in the neck of the body of the jar, the collar or ring J which may be hollow or solid, forming a supplemental neck separate from the neck proper of the jar, and it is of such height that it rises above the top edge of the neck and the bottom edge of the cap, engaging with the underside of said cap at the inner angle of the rim E as a shoulder for the top of the collar, and thus is partly within the neck and partly within the cap, whereby it breaks the jointof the flange of the cap and the neck of the jar and as itis encircled by the contiguous portion of the neck, it has no lateral motion in the latter, and as it is encircled by the flange E of the cap, the latter is prevented from lateral motion, and so as the cap is engaged from within by the collar J, and the latter is rigidly held by the neck of the body. of the jar, While resting on the shoulder B, said collar controls the cap from lateral motion, and so the cap is prevented from being. unseated and consequent displacement should it receive blows or thrusts sidewise or laterally, but hermetical sealing of the jar thus being preserved.
In Fig. 6 I show t to body and cap adapted to have a hollow collar fitted on the exterior thereof. To this end, the cap D has a recess on the exterior of the flange E forming the shoulder K at the top of the same, and the neck has a recess on its exterior forming the shoulder L at thebottom thereof. In said recesses of the neck and cap, the collar is located and prevented from dropping or rising owing to the shoulders K, L, the cap thus being controlled against lateral displacement as in the previously described construction.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I show the collar with short screw threads to engage screw threaded portions of the .cap and neck. In this case, the collar may be screwed to the neck, and the cap-screwed to said collar so as to render the cap immovable in both lateral and vertical directions until it is properly. unscrewed, one of said threads beingoshown in Fig. 9. It is evident that in all 'cases the edges of the cap and neck may be uniformly ground Without mquiring any special constructed wheel, stone or tool for such purpose.
In Figs. 10 and 11, I show a clamp which is composed of arms adapted to be placed on thetop of the cap and hawingvon each of their outerends a hook which is adapted to engage under, a shoulder on the neck 01? the jar, said arms bein Jeccentrically pivoted to each other so that by turning the same their hooks ti htenv against said shoulderand so prevent'any possibility of thecap shiftingin any direction especially laterally,
a feature of importance in shipping jars of the kind when in filled-condition. v Having thus described :my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ais:
1.;A jar body having on its neck an annular seat and an annular shoulder, a cap formed with a depending r'im and a shoulder on the side of the cap theiloweredge, of said rim being adapted to befitted on said E seat, said cap and body having a ground oint, and a supplemental annular neck member adapted to rest laterally against the sides of said neck and rim' and be engaged at the top and bottom by the respective shoulders of said neck and cap and overlap edge of saidgrimbeing adapted -to be fitted I on said seat, said cap and body having a ground ]O1I1t, a supplemental annular neck member adapted to rest laterally against-- the sides of said rim and neck and" to-be engaged by the respective shoulders of-said' neck and cap and overlap the joint of said neck and mm above andbelotvthe san1e,'and' cooperative screw-threads on saidnm and neck and the contiguous portion of said" neck member.
