UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. ROORBAQH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO S. 'IWVITOHELL 85 BROTHER, OF SAME PLACE.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.323,737, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed February 18, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. RooEEAcH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle Stoppers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a bottle and stopper embodying my 'invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the seat of the stopper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention relates to the class of bottlestoppers in which a bottle with an internallygrooved neck is used in connection with packing and a globular stopper, the present invention being an improvement in the bottle st0pper for which Letters Patent of the United States N 0. 272,775 were granted to me on the 20th day of February, 1883.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a bottle, andB represents a groove on the inner face of the neck thereof, said groove having top and bottom horizontally-extending walls, a, and two inclined faces, a a, the inclinations extending in opposite directions, forming at their junction a ridge similar to that shown in my former patent.
G represents a rubber bushing or packing which is fitted to the groove B and constructed in Fig. 2 of two truncated cones, c c, united at their narrow ends, so as to conform exteriorly to the shape of the groove 13, the inner face being. inclined inwardly from the top and bottom, the packing, however, being of greater diameter than said groove, so that it requires to be compressed in order to be fitted in position, and when it is located it hugs the ridge of the neck and spreads into the upper and lower faces, a a, of the groove, leaving a ridge, 1), on the packing.
1) represents a spherical or globular stopper, the diameter whereof is less than the space within the ridge of the packing, the stopper being inserted into the bottle prior to location of the packing, the latter reducing said space and producing a seat for the stopper, which, as is evident, closes upward thereagainst.
The bottle is filled and charged in any suitable manner and the pressure within the same holds the stopper on its seat. When the bottle is to be opened, the stopper is 5 forced downwardly, thus overcoming the internal pressure and causing it to leave the seat.
In my former patent the packing is of cylindrical form, and when compressed it as- 6 sumes the double conical or inclined form of the groove, but this is only true to a limited extent, for the upper and lower portions of the packing are liable to remain loose and to slip from position, thus imperfectly holding 6 the stopper. I
In the present case the exterior of the packing is primarily of the shape of the groove, and when the packing is compressed and located it expands and fully occupies said 7 groove and tightly rests therein, so that its upper and lower edges abut against the upper and lower walls of the groove without being uncovered or liable to uncover, and
the packing is reliably restrained by the up- 7 per wall of the groove and prevented from slipping off when the packing is forced upwardly by the stopper, due to the pressure within the bottle. The construction of the packing also forms a tight joint at all points 8 between the packing and walls of the groove,
whereby leakage thereat is prevented.
It will also be seen that the stopper makes a joint on the rise of the inner periphery of the packing, thus keeping the contents of 8 the bottle from coming in contact with the rubber and preventing the stopper from being forced out by pressure from within the bottle.
Having thus described my invention, what I 5 claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bottle formed with a groove, 13, in its neck, the same having two inclined faces, a
a, and top and bottom walls, a a, and prog vided with a rubber packing, 0, having both its inner and outer faces inclined respectively in opposite directions to conform to the groove 13, the top edge of said packing being inclosed by the upper wall, a, of 1
