Description

JOHN B. SMITH, OF TOWSON, MARYLAND.
N ON-RE FILLAB LE BOTTLE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN R. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tow-.
son, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle closures and has for its object to provide a closure of simple and cheap construction which may be securely locked in the bottle neck and which while enabling the liquid contents of the bottle to run out freely, will prevent the practical refilling of the bottle.
The invention consists in the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of the parts as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention, in which,
Figure 1 shows a central vertical section through a bottle neck provided with my improved closure. Fig. 2 a similar view, the section however being taken through the closure at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates a perspective view of the closure detached from the bottle neck, and Fig. 4 shows a sectional plan view through the neck and closure, the section being taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral, 1, designates a bottle neck and, 2, the closure in the interior thereof.
The closure has a spool-shaped appearance in that it is provided with upper and lower circular heads, 3, and, 4, and an intermediate body portion, 5, which is also circular but of a smaller diameter than the said circular heads, whereby to form an annular space, 6, around the body portion and between the latter and the bottle neck.
The lower circular head, 4, of the closure is provided with an annular groove, 7, in which a split ring, 8, of some yielding or elastic material is confined. The bottle heads, 8, and, 4, will fit tight in the bottlev Specification of Letters Patent.

neck and prevent fluid from passing between the heads and the wall of said neck.
The upper head, 3, is provided with a central vertical passage, 10, while passages, 11, extend inwardly from diametrically opposite sides of the body portion, 5, and communicate with said central passage.
At the lower end, the closure is provided with a central chamber, 12, which extends up into the intermediate body portion, 5, and has position in a horizontal plane between the two heads, 3, and, 4.
One or more ports, 13, extend laterally from the central chamber, 12, and open into the annular space, 6, around the intermediate body portion, 5. These ports, 13, it will be noted have position in a horizontal lane above the upper surface, 14, of the ower head, 4, so as to prevent a wire, that may be inserted in the central passage, 10, from being entered into either of the ports, 13. It Wl also be noted that the ports, 13, and passages, 11, have positions in different vertical planes so that their relative positions will be substantially at right angles.
A suitable valve, 15, is located in the chamber, 12, and the seat, 16, for the valve in the present instance is formed in a bushing or sleeve, 17, that is secured in the lower end of the valve chamber. A central passage, 18, extends downwardly from the valve chamber and its lower end opens at the bottom side of the lower head, 4.
After the bottle is filled the closure is pushed down into the neck until it is locked in position as described. By turning the bottle up-side-down the valve will move away from over the passage, 18, and at the same time uncover the ports, 13, so the liquid can pass into the annular space, 6. After entering the annular space the liquid may be discharged through the passages, 11, and finally out through the central passage, 10.
The upper end of the bottle neck is preferably closed by a stopper, 19, or sealing device.
The operation of the device is obvious from the drawing.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A bottle closure having a central body portion with an enlarged head at each end thereof, the head at the upper end having a central vertical opening and branch passages extending laterally in diametrically-opposite the head at the lower end of the closure havdirections from the central passage and said branch passages extending through and opening at the side of the upper body portion, and the body of said closure being ri id with the heads and having a central va ve the rigid bushing.
chamber with laterally-extending passages In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in diametrically-opposite sides of the body in presence of two witnesses.
which communicate with the chamber, and JOHN R SMITH.
a concave seat which is permanently fixed in a horizontal plane below the lateral passages in the body, and a-ball in the valve chamber 15 and normally seated on the concave seat of Witnesses:
