Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELENA ll/IAYOLINI DE Vamps, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle stoppers, and particularly to bottle stoppers of the type disclosed in my copending application for patent for non-refillable bottle, Serial No. (579,579, filed February 24:, 1912.
The object in view is to provide an improved construction easy to be manufactured and at the same time present such a structure as to resist the refilling of the bottle to which the stopper is connected.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a bottle stopper, an improved guarding member co-acting with a valve structure for guarding or preventing tampering with the valve structure.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, a bottle of any desired kind is provided having a neck formed with a pair of spaced annular grooves. In one of the annular grooves is arranged a resilient ring designed to engage an annular groove in the guard. The guard is formed with a tortuous passageway therethrough and with various spider constructions for allowing liquid to freely flow through, but arranged so as to positively prevent a tool of any kind from being passed to the valve structure arranged below the guard. The valve structure is supported preferably by a packing ring and has co-acting therewith a float member designed to close the valve structure in case the bottle is inverted and fluid is forced into the neck. A suitable weight is provided for closing the valve structure when the bottle is in a vertical position.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the neck of a bottle and through an embodiment of the invention applied there to; Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 1 on the line 2-2; and Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 1 on the line 3-3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a bottle of any desired kind having a neck 2 formed with an annular flange 3 and annular grooves 41: and 5. In the annular groove 5 is arranged a retaining ring (3, preferably of cork, which is adapted to extend into an annular groove 7 in the body portion 8 of a guard 9. The body portion 8 is provided with a central bore 10 and a plurality of radiating apertures 11 at the bottom. Projecting from the upper edge of the body portion 8 are a plurality of posts 12 merging into a disk 13 having a plurality of legs 14 extending therefrom to a position contacting or almost contacting with the neck 2. The disk 13 and legs 14- form substantially a spider structure with a solid center which effectually covers the bore 10 and thus prevents a tool from being forced through the guard. However, the plate or disk 13 by reason of the fact that the same is raised above the top of the body will not prevent the flowing of fluid through the guard.
Arranged below the guard 9 is a weight 15, preferably in the shape of a ball, resting on a float 16 preferably formed of cork. The float 16 is made smaller than the interior bore of the neck 2 so as to permit fluid to pass around the same when the bottle 1 is being emptied. However, the float 16 is made of such a size as to raise the valve member 17 and force the same against its seat 18 in case the bottle 1 is inverted and fluid is forced upwardly through the neck 2 toward the interior of the bottle. The seat 18 is formed on the upper edge of the sleeve 19 provided with an annular flange 20 resting on an annular ring 21. formed preferably of cork, the annular ring 21 being fitted into the annular groove 4. The sleeve 19 is provided with a central bore 22 and with a plurality of spacing lugs 23 for spacing the sleeve 24 of the valve member 17 from the sides of bore 22 so as to permit fluid to freely flow from the bottle 1 when the valve member 17 is unscated, but the end of the sleeve 24 is still projecting in the bore 22. The sleeve 24. is adapted to guide the valve member in its back and forth movement and to prevent it from continually having a portion thereof fitting into the bore 2'2. The member 19 may be formed rigidly in the neck of the bottle.
Then it is desired to empty the bottle 1 or remove a portion of the liquid therefrom,
the ordinary or usual cork stopper 25 is removed and the bottle 1 inverted. This will cause the ball 15 to rest against the body portion of the guard 9 and the float 16 and valve 17 to move downwardly from the seat 18. This will allow the fluid to freely pass from the bottle 1 through bore 22 and from thence around the float 16 and finally out the guard 9 to the end of the neck 2. In order to positively hold the sleeve 19 in place the annular ring 21 is made of such a size as to press tightly against the same and thus frictionally resist any movement of the sleeve. It will be evident that this will be suiiicient as there is very little tendency of the sleeve to move. After the contents have been emptied or partially emptied, the bottle is then raised to a vertical position and the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the valve member 17 is held on its seat by the ball 15 when the bottle is in a vertical position and that the float 16 will move the valve member 17 to its seat when the bottle is inverted and it is attempted to force liquid into the bot tle 1.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
In a non-refillable bottle, the combination of a neck of a bottle provided with a groove, a guard comprising an integral body member having a central opening and a circumferential groove, an integral plate or disk covering the opening and spaced from the body member by longitudinally extending posts, radially extending legs on the integral plate or disk adapted to contact with the in terior of the neck of the bottle, the body member being provided on its lower surface with a plurality of radiating apertures, and a locking member cooperating with the grooves in the neck and in the body member to secure the guard in the neck of the bottle, a valve, a float, and a wei 'ht adapted to cooperate with the float and a so with the lower surface of the guard to permit the contents of the bottle when it is inverted, escaping through the radiating apertures in the body member.
