PATENTED DEC. 11, 1906f A. A. Low, SEALING MEANS FOR VESSELS.
APPLICATION FILED APR-19,1906.
INVENTOH W/TNESSES ATTORNEY THE mmms PETERS co, wnsumcrcrv, a. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF HORSESHOE, NEW YORK.
SEALING MEANS FOR VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec, 11, 1906.
Application filed April 19, 1906- Serial No. 312,7] 4.
To all whont it warty concern.-
tgBe it known that I, ABBoT AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, New York State, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing Means for Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for sealing vessels and it consists in certain elements fully specified in the following schedule and claimed at the end thereof.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may understand, construct, and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, referring to the drawings herewith, in which Figure 1 illustrates a sealing-cap with a raised top and a scalingwasher therein posed above a bottle in which is a stopper which is to be entered in the raised top of the cap when the cap is secured to the vessel and the washer is also to be compressed between the top walls of the bottle and the top of the cap surrounding the raised part. Fig. -2 shows the relative positions of all the parts when they rest upon the bottle previous to being compressed thereon. Fig. 3 shows the said cap-washer and stopper in their relative positions after the cap has beensecured upon the bottle.
A is the bottle-body.
B is the bottle-neck.
O is the usual bead, surrounding the neck at its top.
E is the pendent flange to a cap having a raised top F and an annular top surface D surrounding said raised top, from the outer edge of which flange E ispendent.
H is a sealing-washer in the cap beneath the annular part D of the cap, having a hole centrally thereof of slightly-larger diameter than the internal diameter of the raised portion F. It is tapered at its upper outer edge, as shown.
.G is a sealing-stopper, having its upper two-thirds straight-sided and its lower onethird tapering toward its center.
K is the bore of the bottle shown tapering; but it may be more or less straight-sided.
The diameter of the sealing-stopper G is slightly less than the internal diameter of the hole in-the washer H, so that the position of said washer in relation to the stopper G may be adjustablethat is, assume any relative positions toward each other as may occur in compressing them without either one affecting the integrity of the otherand when the cap is secured upon the bottle each one performs a function independently of the other; but together a double seal is secured. It will be readily seen that the washer and stopper adjust themselves in relation to each other, according to the depth of the raised portion of cap and the relative position of the cap on the bottle. To do this without disturbing the integrity of each element is important; but when this is accomplished and the cap is firmly compressed upon the bottle the removal of the stopper is easily performed, because of the grip of the raised top and the surrounding washer upon it, and after said cap and stopper have been removed the said elements in combination constitute a sealing device, which is integral in itself and available as a whole to so close a bottle.
The taper of the upper outer edge of the Washer H is to enable the washer to enter the cap easily.
Having now fully described my invention and the manner in which I have embodied it, what I claim as new and as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
A sealing means for vessels, consisting of a metallic sealing-cap having a raised top, an annular top surface surrounding said raised top, apendent flange dropped from the outer diameter of said annular top surface, a sealing-washer beneath said annular surface, having a central hole of slightly-smaller diameter than the inner diameter of the said raised portion, a stopper having its upper portion straight-sided and its lower portion tapering toward its center, the upper portion being constructed to enter tightly the said raised portion of the cap, and to pass freely through the hole in the washer contained in the cap whereby when being secured upon a vessel the positions of the several elements are adjustable, relative to each other, and when fully compressed upon a vessel the parts become substantially united to form an integral whole substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed-my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of April, 1906.
ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW.
