H. L. MARTYN 8: W. D. LEDNUM.
PRESERVE JAR. No. 450,827. PatentedApr.Z1, 1891.
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. MARTYN AND IVILLIAM D. LEDNUM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PRESERVE=JAR.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,827, dated April 21, 1891.
. Application filed February 12, 1891. Serial No. 381,145. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that we, HENRY L. MARTYN and WILLIAM. D. LEDNUM, citizens of the United States, both residing in the city and countyof Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have inventedanew and useful Improvement in Preserve Vessels or Jars, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of a preserve vessel or jar having a cap with grooves on the inner face thereof for engagement with lugs on the neck of the vessel or jar, said neck having also a groove forming a seat for a gasket, which is compressed by the rim of the cap in a direction at or'about a right angle to the vertical axis of the jar, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a preserve vessel or jar embodying our in vention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of a portion thereof on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a preserve vessel or jar, preferably made of glass, as usual in such cases.
B designates the neck of the jar, the same having on the exterior thereof the outwardlyprojecting lugs C, the faces D whereof are rounded, inclined, or otherwise shaped.
E designates the cap of the jar, the same having a rim F, adapted to encircle the neck of the jar, the inner face of said rim being formed with inclined or spiral grooves G, which are open at the bottom, so that the lugs C may enter said grooves G, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
On the exterior of the neck Bis agroove H, in which is seated the packing or gasket J, formed of soft rubber or other suitable material, the same being adapted to be compressed by the rim F, so as to hermetically seal the jar, for which purpose the rim is flaring or widening from top to bottom, so as to present an inclined face to said gasket.
The operation is as follows: lhe cap is presented to the neck of the jar, so that the lugs D register with the bases of the grooves G and enter the same. The cap is rotated, whereby the walls of the groove Gr ride upon said lugs D, and owing to the inclined or spiral nature of said grooves the cap is forced downwardly and interlocked with the neck. In the descending motion of the cap the flaring face of the rim F presses laterally or inwardly against the gasket, thus gradually compressing the same and forming a tight joint between the neck and rim, whereby the jar is reliably sealed. It is evident that when the cap is rotated in reverse direction itis released from the holding action of the lugs, when it may be readily removed from the jar.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- M 1. A jar with lugs on the exterior portion of the neck thereof and a closing-cap with grooves in the interior surface of its rim, said jar having a groove in the side of its neck, receiving a gasket, which is compressed inwardly in lateral direction by the action of said rim, substantially as described.
2. A jar with lugs on the exterior of the neck thereof and a circumferential groove therein, a gasket adapted to be seated in said groove, and a cap having a flaring rim with interior grooves to engage the lugs on the neck of the jar, whereby the gasket is compressed inwardly in lateral direction against the neck, substantially as described.
