To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Crims- TOPHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonawanda, county of Erie, and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brooms.

My object is to provide a novel separable broom head and holder, whereby when one broom head is worn out or for any reason no longer of use, it may be detached from its handle'and thrown away and another broom head substituted therefor, thus saving the cost of a broom handle whenever .a new broom is desired.

Another object is to provide a broom head constructed in a new manner, and a detachable handle adapted to coiiperate therewith.

A further object is the provision of a broom head of novel construction and form.

The invention consists, first, in a broom head of novel construction and form; and second, in a novel broom head and a holder adapted to cotiperate therewith in a new manner, whereby the broom head is securely held, ready for immediate detachment, for the insertion of a substitute broom head in the holder, when desired or necessary.

The present application is a division of my application, Serial No. 687188, filed March 29, 1912, broom holder.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a detailed View of the broom head; Fig. 2, a side View, partly broken away, showing the broom head secured in the holder; Fig. 3, a front view thereof, the holder being broken away; and Fig. 4, a detailed view opposite to Fig. 3.

The broom head 1 is provided with the usual stitching 2 to hold the bristles thereof together. In respect of the broom head, my invention consists in dipping or impreg; nating the upper end 3 in some suitable adhesive material to aid in securing the bristles together and, also, in cutting away the head at 4 to provide shoulders 5, whereby the broom head is held against lateral displacement in any form of the holder hereinafter described. I also find it advisable to secure the bristles together in addition to the usual stitching by wire stitching 6.

abling it to be readily clamped and securely held by the holder set forth hereinafter.

To any suitable handle 7 is secured in any suitable manner at 8, the clamping jaws 9 and 10 of the holder, these being flexible and provided with teeth 11 and rounded edges 12, whereby lateral displacement of the broom head is prevented and no projections are afforded which would catch on the clothing or objects or would injure furniture. These sections 9 and 10 may be stampings, but they may be otherwise formed. In the section 9 there are a longitudinal depression 13 and a transverse depression 14, the two intersecting. There are also provided openings 15. 10 are depressions 16 and openings 17.

The clamping handle 18 is adapted to lie in the longitudinal depression 13 when the sections 9 and 10 clamp the broom head and the fulcrum 19 lies in the depression 14: and is provided with cranks 20 to which are connected links 21 that extend through the openings 15 and 17, there being provided members 22 connected to said links which lie in depressions 16. The cranks 20 are so arranged that when the handle 18 is pressed into depression 13, the cranks draw on the links 21 and clamp the jaws 9 and 10 against the broom head 1. Disposed between the sections of jaws 9 and 10 is a spring 23 which may be a leaf spring and which is provided with a bifurcated end 24 straddling the raised part of the holder formed by the depression 13 and the other end of the spring bears against the raised parts of the holder formed by the depressions 16, whereby the spring is anchored without requiring any attaching means therefor. The spring 23 opens the jaws when the handle 18 is moved to permit said spring to act, the jaws then being in position to permit the introduction of the broom head 1 between them.

The broom head having been inserted between the jaws or sections 9 and 10 and the latter being clamped together, the teeth 11 firmly engage and hold the broom head. The rounded edges 12 of the holder, as also the shoulders 5 on the broom head, prevent lateral play of the latter. The broom may be used until it is worn out and then detached from the holder and thrown away and another substituted.
