BROCHE-HEAD HOLDER.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Crims- 'rori-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at rIonawanda, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom- Head Holders, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to broom head holders.

My object is to provide a detachable broom head and handle, whereby when one broom head is worn out or for any reason no longer of use, it may be detached from its handle and thrown away and another broom head substituted therefor, thus saving the cost of a broom handle whenever a new broom is desired.

Another object is to provide a broom head constructed in a new manner and a detachable handle of novel construction adapted to coperate therewith.

One object is the provision of a broom handle having a novel attachable broom holder which will permit a broom head to be readily inserted thereinto or removed therefrom in a quick and convenient manner.

A further object is the provision of a broom having a .detachable head and a holder therefor which may be constructed at comparatively low cost and whereby the broom head will be securely held ready for convenient attachment at any time.

The invention resides in certain novel constructions, arrangements and adaptations of parts more fully set forth hereinafter and recited in the appended claims, certain embodiments of the invention being shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side View showing the broom head in position and the holder closed; Fig. 2, a View looking toward the opposite side of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an edge view partly in section, showing the broom head in position; Fig. 4, a detail view of the broom head; Fig. 5, a detail perspective of the clamping handle and links; Fig. 6, a similar view of a modification thereof.

The broom head 1 is provided with the usual stitching 2 to hold the bristles thereof together. In respect of the broom head, my invention consists in dipping or impregnating the upper end 3 in some suitable adhesive material to aid in securing the bristles together and; also, in cutting away the Specicaton of Letters Patent.

A broom head constructed as set forth has considerable rigidity at its upper end enabling it to be readily clamped and securely held by the holder set forth hereinafter. rlhis head is set forth and claimed in another application, filed Aug. 5, 1912, Serial No. 713,386, broom.

To any suitable handle 7 is secured in any suitable manner at 8, the clamping jaws 9 and 10 of the holder, these being flexible and provided with teeth 11 and rounded edges 12, whereby lateral displacement of the broom head is prevented and no proj ections are afforded which would catch on the clothing or objects or would injure furniture. rlhese sections 9 and 10 may be stampings, but they may be otherwise formed. In the section 9 there are a longitudinal depression 13 and a transverse depression 14, the two intersecting. 'lhere are also provided openings 15. 1n the section 10 are depressions 16 and openings 17.

rilhe clamping handle 18 is adapted to lie in the longitudinal depression 13 when the sections 9 and 10 clamp the broom head and the fulcrum 19 lies in the depression and is provided with cranks 2O to which are connected links 21 that extend through the openings 15 and 17, there being provided members 22 connected to said links which lie in depressions 16. Disposed between the sections of jaws 9 and 10 is a spring 23 which may be a leaf spring and provided with a bifurcated end 211 straddling the raised part below the depression 18 and the other end of the spring bearing against the raised parts formed by the depressions 16, whereby the spring is anchored without requiring any attaching means therefor. The spring 23 opens the jaws when the handle 18 is moved to permit said spring to act, the jaws then being in position to permit the introduction of the broom head between them.

As shown in Fig. 6, the handle 18a and its fulcrum 19a and the cranks may be formed of a single piece of wire and the links 21a and their members 22a may be formed of single pieces of wire.

The broom head having been inserted between the jaws or sections 9 and 10 and the latter` being lclamped together, the teeth' firmly engage an'dhold the broom'headwan'd the rounded edges of the holder, as also the shoulders 5 on the broom head an'd'prevent Alateral play of the latter.
