AUGUSTINE E. STAPLES, OF CHESTER, VERMONT.
COW-TAIL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1911.
Application led September 23, 1910. Serial No. 583,509.
y To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE E. SfrAPLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Windsor and State of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a device for holding cow tails during the milking of cows.
The object of the invention is to provide a clamp or holder of novel and peculiar construction and arrangement, for fitting the gambrelecord of the leg of a cow.
A further object of the invention is to provide a specially shaped springV clamp adapted to fit the gambrehcord of the leg of a cow, and to provide in such clamp novel and peculiar means for holding the wisp of the cow-tail.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application :Figure l is a representation of a cow showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing a tail wisp held by the clamp. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp.
The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In preventing a cows tail from switching, it is important that the tail wisp should be securely held, and for this purpose I have provided a spring clamp for clamping the tail to the leg of the cow, and for clamping the tail wisp in the clamp, so that both the tail and its wisp may be securely clamped, and expeditiously released.
The tail holder is composed of a single piece or plate of spring metal bent or shaped to form a V-shaped portion l, having a back 2, and front wings 3 bent inwardly so as to form corners which fit the gambrel-cord of a cows leg and thereby prevent the holder from turning. The wing portions 3 are folded backwardly into engagement with said corners and they are sprung apart in attaching and removingthe holder as will be hereinafter fully set forth. The plate portions 4 are made to follow the side walls 5, of the V-shaped portion from the wings 3 to a depression (i, which engages said walls and forms a closure for an interval 7, between the walls 5 of the spring portions 4. F rom the depression 6, the plate is extended to form spring arms 8, which are folded to form loops 9, and the plate extends from the loops 9 along the outer face of the arms 8, to form spring wings l0, which terminate forward of the depressions 6.
In applying` the clamp, it is grasped at the arms and the wings which are pressed inwardly for opening the front or mouth of the V-shaped portion so as to permit the walls thereof to clamp'the gambrel-cord of a cows leg when the arms are released, with the tail between the leg and the said walls, and`the tail wisp 11, hanging below the clamp or holder, the wisp is then divided and first passed into the intervals 7, and then into the loops 9, where it is clamped independent of the tail. It will be observed that the tail is first clamped to the leg, and that there are four separate clampings of the tail-wisp, so that the holder forms a multiple of clamps. It is obvious that the wisp may be quickly and expeditiously removed from its clamps. and that the holder is capable of quick and expeditious adjustment and removal.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular size or material in making the holder, nor to the length of the spring arms and wings.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination, with a cow-tail holder adapted to fit the gambrel-cord of a cows leg for clamping the tail thereto, of a plurality of tail-wisp holders comprising a pair of side clamps, and a pair of end clamps connected with the tail holder by extensions of the side clamps.
2. A cow-tail and wisp holder composed of a single piece of spring metal and comprising a V-shaped portion having inwardly projecting front wings and adapted to fit the gambrel-cord of a cows leg for clamp- In Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
AUGUSTINE E. STAPLES.
