To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon B. Tnonms, a citizen of the United States of America, residing .in the city of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shadc-I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shade holders, and particularly to novel means for securing the shade holder to its support, such .tor instance as an electric lamp socket.
In the accompanying drawings, exemplary of the invention, Figure l is a side elevation of an electric lamp socket; Fig.' 2 is a vertical section of a shade holder; Fig. 3'
is a side elevation of the shade holder in position on a lamp socket; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section of a detail.
The globe-holding feature of the present device may be of any desired character. In the form shown I have illustrated, by way of example, a common spring ring 5 supported in the peripheral flange 6 of the shade holder body.
The present invention is concerned particularly with the means for mounting the holder upon its support, particularly upon an electric lamp socket. To accomplish this I provide a central collar 7, within the shade holder body and preferably depending so that it is concealed from view in adjusted position. The upper portion of this collar is of slightly gllitli'tll' diameter than the lower portion and provided with a thread 8. Cotiperating with this threaded portion of the collar 7, I propose to correspondingly thread, as at 9, the usual head on the lamp socket 10. In order that the latter may not be so greatly deformed, that its utility as a support for shade holders of other well known types is not lost, the threads are preferably confined to the crown of the head as shown.
To mount the holder upon the socket it is merely necessary to pass the same over the lamp-receiving end of the socket until the threads 8 are in position to engage the threads t whereupon the mere rotation of the shade holder, with relation to the socket, will serve to screw the holder home upon the threaded bead. The shoulder 11 in the collar 7 forms a stop which halts the shade holder after it has been screwed home and the parts are thus assembled.
By utilizing the usual head 9 on the socket as the portion for carrying the securing thread, I maintain the utility of the head for its usual purposes while at the same time I adapt it for the novel attaching means of the present shade holder.
I claim as my invention 1. A lamp socket having a cap and shell, a head on the latter adjacent the lamp receiving end thereof, said bead having threads thereon confined to its crown to form an engaging support for a shade holder, substantially as described.
2. A lamp socket having a cap and shell, a head on the latter adjacent the lamp recciving end thereof, said head having threads thereon confined to its crown to form an engaging support for a shade holder, in combination with a shade holder having a central'collar threaded to engage said head, said collar being offset to form a limiting abutment below its threaded portion, substantially as described.
3. A lamp socket having a cap and shell, a bead on the latter adjacent the lamp receiving end thereof, said head having threads thereon confined to its crown to form an engaging support for a shade holder, in combination with a shade holder having a central depending collar internally threaded only at its upper portion to engage the thread on said head, substantially as described.
