UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
GEORGE B. THOMAS, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRYANT ELEC- TRIC COMPANY, 0F BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION 0F CONNECTICUT.
SHADE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at Bridgeport, inthe county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and Improved Shade-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to shade holders and partici'ilarly to means for securing a holder to its support, the object of my invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device for locking the shade holder on a lamp socket or other suitable support.
In the accompanying drawings, made to an enlarged scale for the purpose of better illustration, Figure 1 is a vertical section through my improved shade holder show* ing the same mounted upon a lamp socket; and Fig. 2 is a perspective of the shade holder parts detached and in position for` mount-ing upon its support.
The globe or shade supporting means carried by the holder' form no part of my invention and may be of any suitable character. In the form shown they comprise the usual set screws 5, threaded through the depending peripheral iange 6 of the holder.
The means employed for mounting the holder upon the support are as follows: Integral with the body .of the holder I form an upwardly extending neck portion 7, which is beveled at its inner upper edge 8 to conform to the contour of the bead 9, formed as usual at the lamp receiving end of the shell 10 of the lamp socket. The neck 7 is externally threaded to receive the locking ring 11, which is of greater diameter than the neck and which may be passed over the bead 9 on the socket shell. A spring ring 12 of any suitable construction is sprung over the bead 9 and is engaged by the inwardly projecting flange 13 at the upper edge of the' locking sleeve 11, when the latter is screwed down upon the neck 7 of the shade holder.
The method of assembling the parts is readily understood. The locking sleeve 11 having been passed over the lamp receiving end of the socket shell to a position above the bead 9, the spring ring 12 is then adjusted above the bead and the holder pushed up on the socket until its beveled edge 8 engages with the lower surface of the bead 9. The locking sleeve l1 is then brought Specification of Letters Patent.

down into position to be threaded upon the neck 7. Obviously as the sleeve is screwed down upon the neck 7 the bead 9 is clamped between the flange 13 and ring 12 on the one hand, and the neck 7on the other hand, so that the holder is securely locked in position.
To facilitate the screwing and unserewing of the sleeve 11, upon the neck 7, I provide a recess 1.4L in the sleeve 11 which may be engaged by the end of a Spanner or other instrument. Any other suitable means for facilitating the screwing down of the locking sleeve may be provided.
I claim asmy invention l. A shade holder having a depending peripheral flange, shade holder engaging means carried thereby, an upwardly extending externally threaded neck adapted to engage the lower face of a supporting bead, a split ring adapted to lic above said supporting bead, in combination with an internally threaded locking sleeve of greater diameter than the neck oit' said holder and adapted to be passed over the supporting bead and brought down into threaded engagement with said neck, together with an inwarglly projecting [lange at the upper edge of said sleeve adapted to engage said spring ring when screwed down upon the neck of said holder.
2. A shade holder having a depending peripheral flange, shade holder engaging means carried thereby, an upwardly extending externally threaded neck adapted to engage the lower face of a supporting bead, and beveled on the inner face of its upper edge to correspond to the shape 0f said bead, a split ring adapted to lie above said supporting bead, in combination with an internally threaded locking sleeve of greater diameter than the neck of said holder and adapted to be passed over the supporting bead and brought down into threaded engagement with said neck, together' with an inwardly projecting flange at the upper edge of said sleeve adapted to engage said spring ring when screwed down upon the neck of said holder.
rlhe con'lhination with a standard socket having a circumferential bead, of a shade holder having an abutment member lying to one side of said bead, a cooperating abutment member lying to the other side of said bead, one of said abutment members being of greater diameter than said bead, a filling piece between said bead and the abutment member of greater diameter and means for drawing said abutment members together to lock the shade holder to said bead.
4. In a device of the character described,
`the* combination with a shade holder body having an abutment adapted to be juxtaposed to one side of a supporting bead, of a cooperating independent abutment member adapted to be juxtaposed to'the opposite side of said supporting bead, a filling piece interposed between one of said abutment members and the supporting bead, and
'means for drawing said abutment members means for drawing said clamping members together to lock the holder to the bead.
6. A shade holder comprising a body portion with peripheral flange, shade holding means carried by said flange, a central threaded neck with abutment adapted tov engage the'lower side of a supporting bead, a spring ring adapted to lie above said bead and a cooperating threaded sleeve with inturned Flange lying above said ring in adjusted position and in threaded engagement with said neck, serving to draw said members together to lock the shade holder to the bead.
7. A shade holder having cooperating clamping members adapted to lie above and below a supporting bead, one of said members comprising a member of greater diameter than said bead and a filling piece interposed between said clamping member and bead in adjusted position, in combination with means for drawing said clamping members together to lock said holder -to said bead, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE B. THOMAS.
