HAT-RETAINING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 24, 1912.
. Application filed June 13, 1911. Serial No.632,955.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, CHARLES VVEIss and GUSTAVE VVnIss, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Glendale, Queens county, New York, have invented certain Improvements in Hat-Retaining Devices, of.
which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to certain improvements in hat retaining devices, such as are particularly designed and adapted for use in. connection with ladies hats, for holding the same in place upon" the wearers heads,
' and the object. of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a simple and comparatively lnexpensive nature, and of a llghtand compact construc- 7 tion having retaining means of a novel and improved description capable of convenient operation to engage and disengage the hair when the hat is in place upon the head, and
adapted, when so engaged, to hold the hat securely in position upon the wearers head.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combina tions and arrangements of the several parts of the improved hat retaining device, whereby certain important advantages are attained, and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as willbe hereinafter fully set forth.
. The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In order that our improvements may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the retaining device constructedin accordance with the invention in applied position, the crown of the hat being shown in section for the purpose of better illustration; Fig. 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section illustrating theimproved retaining device indetail; Fig. 3 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating the engaging meansin operative position, the lnoperatlve positlon being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating a certain detail of const-ruction to be hereinafter referred to; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken centrally through the device on the line a-@ of Fig. 2.
' tion B elongated inform and of a length- As herein shown, the improved. hat retaining device is provided with a body poradapted to be extended transversely across the crown A of the hat, said body portion 7 including two members C and D which may with convenience be formed from stlfl metal wire of similar construction but reversely arranged and having straight stems 1, 1
which overlap each other at the central part of the elongated body portion whereat they are embraced by an elongated sleeve or barrel 10-within which said straight stems are adapted for independent endwise sliding movement, and also for relative turning movement independently ofeachother. The bore 11 of the sleeve or barrel is made to receive the overlapping parts ofthe stems 1, 1 snugly, for which purpose said sleeve or barrel is made slightly flattened or elongated in cross section, as shown in Fig. 5
of the drawings. 7 i The stems 1, 1 of the members C and D project in opposite directions beyond the opposite ends of the sleeve or barrel 10 and of any desired fanciful or ornamental de-.
sign, and are provided, as herein shown,
with shanks 6, 6 havingaxial bores 5, 5 7
adapted to receive the tapered! and shouldered outer ends of the body portion, said shanks being split transversely and pro- 9 vided with locking projections 4, 4 at the opposite sides of their bores 5so that when the tapered and shouldered ends of the body portion are inserted within said bores 5, the' split shanks will press with some resilience upon the opposite sides of the taperedparts of the stems, and will serve to retain the locking projections 4:, tinsecure engagement with the rounded shoulders 3,3 of the stems,
as indicated in Fig. 41. In this way it will. T be ,seenthat the heads or caps 7, 7 when in I place upon the stems of the members C andD of the body portion will be securely held against accidental displacement by the engagement of their split shanks 6 andtheir locking shoulders 4, 4 with the tapered parts 2 and shoulders 3, 3 of said stems, while at the same time said heads or caps may be readily detached from the members when desired, after which said members C and D may be slid endwise relatively to one another, so as to shorten the body portion B of the device to such an extent as to permit it to be placed transversely across the interior of the crown A of the hat, whereupon said members C and D may be slid endwise in reverse directions in such a way that the substantially alined pointer extremities thereof are caused to penetrate the opposite side walls of the hat crown and to protrude beyond the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
After the insertion of the device within the crown of the hatas above described, the engagement of the oppositely directed and substantially alined ends of the stems 1, 1 with the opposite side walls of the hat crown affords a secure support for retaining the body portion in position extended transversely across the interior of said crown, and the caps or heads 7, 7 may be applied upon the protruding pointed extremities of of the body portion as above set forth, and will serve, when so applied, to hold the device securely in place in the hat against accidental displacement, while upon removal of the caps or heads and reverse endwise movement of the members C and D the device may be quickly and conveniently removed from the hat in order that it may be applied to another hat, if desired.
At their ends opposite to the tapered and pointed portions 2, the stems of the respective members C and D have laterally bent or directed portions 8, 8 pointed at their extremities so as to be adapted to penetrate the hair readily when the hat is placed upon the head, and curved in such a fashion as to afford oppositely directed hook-like portions or prongs spaced apart from each other at the opposite ends of the elongated sleeve or barrel 10, and which are adapted, when the device is in place in the hat, and its members C and D turned 0r rotated relatively to each other within the sleeve or barrel 10, to play in vertical planes so as to pass in opposite directions through the hair in such a way as to securely engage the same for holding the hat in place upon the head, or to be with- 5 drawn from engagement with the hair so that the hat may be removed from the head, accordingly as the members 0 and D are turned or rotated in one direction or the other.
As herein shown the hook-like portions or prongs 8, 8 have curvatures, as indicated at 9, so that their extremities are adapted to engage the hair at a considerable distance below the sleeve or barrel 10, after which,
during the further turning movement of the members, the hair is drawn upwardly along said curved parts of the prongs, so as to draw the hat downward and retain it securely in position upon the head, while when the members are reversely turned, the curva- 7o tures of said prongs causes them to be withdrawn upwardly from the hair without liability of becoming entangled therein.
The endwise sliding movement of the members relatively to each other permits the device not only to be conveniently inserted within and withdrawn from the hat, but affords a means whereby the body portion may be shortened or lengthened to adapt it to hats of different sizes, and the heads or 30 caps 7, 7 upon the substantially alined end portions of the device not only prevent accidental displacement of the device, but also afford means for conveniently turning the members independently and simultaneously 35 in reverse directions when it is desired to engage their prongs 8, S with the hair or to disengage'them therefrom, and also afiord means for conveniently moving the members C and D endwise relatively to each other in order that their prongs 8, 8 may be positioned at greater or less distances from one another as may be desired.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved hat retaining device constructed according to our invention is capable of convenient and ready application to the hat and removal therefrom, and is simple in construction and economical to manufacture, and it will also be obvious from the above description that the device is susceptible of considerable modification within the scope of the appended claims without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason we do not desire to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts, as herein set forth, in carrying out the invention in practice.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
