HAT-PIN.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: r

1 Be it known that I, JOHN D.'BANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phila- .delphia, in the county of Philadelphia and proved hat pin.

State ofPennsylvania, have invented cei tain new and useful Improvements in I'Iat- Pins, of which the following is a specification.

'This invention relates to hat pins and more particularly to a device whereby the pin may be normally secured to the hat, but permitting the pin to be removed entirely from the hat when desired; The object being to so secure the pin that it will not be lost and yet to permit the pinto be removed when desired. These objects are obtained byfthe novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully" described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which:-

In the drawings A, indicates a holder comprising a casing provided with oppositely disposed slotsA, A arranged at right angles to each other, through which a hat pin B, is adapted to pass, which is provided with a flattened portion B, whereby it will be prevented from being withdrawn from the holder, unless turned in a certain position, and in order to detach the pin, the flattened portion is turned until it registers with the .slot A, and then drawn outwardly until the flattened portion reaches the central entween the flattened portion and the head,

whereby it can be forced through the hair, so as to securely fasten the hat in osition. lhe' flattened portion is so forme that it will not catch in the hair or injure the hat in any manner when forced through the same.

the springs will engage the flattened portion;

and securely hold it, and'prevent it from being withdrawn; It is of course understood,

that when it is desired toremove the pin altogether, it can be removed by drawing on it with sufficient force, which will force the springs apart and allow the flattened portion to pass between the same.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a hat pin which is provided with very novel means for holding,

it to a hat, so as to prevent it from being lost. While I have shown .my device as applied to hold a hat pin, I do not wish to be limited thereto as the holder made as before described might be used for holding other kinds ofpins, the construction preventing the removal of the pin from the holder. I have shown the holder as provided wit ispurs whereby it may be attached to the exterior of a hat or other article of apparel, but I do not wish to be limited to such a spurred holder or to this location, as the holder might be otherwise attached to the article or located in another position and act as well to prevent the withdrawal of the pin. Having thus, described my invention wha I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
