JOINVILLE F. FOWLEILYOF ALLIANCE, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 104,724, die-tell June 28, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOWS I'OR CARRIAGE-TOPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom i t mag/concern Be it known that, J OINVILLE F. FOWLER, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steel Bows for Carriage-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the curve of the top, of steel or'of equivalent metal, with a curve on the end of the-steel, to which the .wood top is made to conform, or in making the bow entirelv of steel, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a side view of y the bows of a carriagetop extended.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of fig. 1, on the line xx.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts.
In this example of my invention, the steel portions of the bows are connected with wood tops, the ends of the steel bows being curved to receive the wood, as seen in fig.
A represents the steel, B, the wood. I I
Instead of making the eutirebow of part steel and part wood, the bow may be made entirely of steel, but I prefer the mode shown in the drawing. The steel-and the woodare connected and fastened together by screws or rivets, as represented in the drawing. The lower ends of the bows are jointed to the main bow C, so that the connection is strong and durable.
By thus forming the main portion of them of steel or of any equivalent metal, the bows are much lighter in appearance and more durable than when made of wood in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The steel bows A, either with or without the wood tops B, substantially as and for the purposes described.
J OINVILLE F. FOWLER.
I Witnesses:
J osEPH Barnum, J OHN EASTMAX.
