Beit known that we, EDWARD B. BLAcx, J osEPH HINKLE, Jr., and Timms S. WHITE, of Columbia., in the county of Lancaster, and -State of Pennsylvania.,

have invented a new and improved Brick and Mortary Hed; and we do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exactdeseription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and; use Vthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part-of this specification, inwhich--f v 'Figure 1 is a. perspective view of our improved lied. Our invention. has for its object to furnish an improved. hod for carrying brick and mortar, whichv shall be stronger, more durable, less expensive, and equally light or lighter than the ordinary wooden hed; and

A is lthe body of the hod, the sides a' of which are made of heavy sheet-iron, out. into the proper form, and bent into the proper shape. l

c is the end,'orrear side of the bod, which is also made of sheet-iron, but which we prefer to make double,

. tobraee and strengthen it, and alsctoprevent the rivets from tearing out.

The end, a,is cut into the proper term, and its side, or inclined edges are turned. inward, and are riveted .to the rear parts of the sides a, as shown in g. 1.

B is the upper part of the handle, which is made of iron, and the'upper en'd of which 4is made forked to t upon the body A of the hod, to which itis securely riveted, as shown in g. 1. 1

In th lower end of the part B, is, formed-a. socket to receive the upper end of the wooden part O cf the handle.

D is the shoulder-cushion, which is made of leather, stuffed with hair. Over the edges of the leather coverwhich is then bent into proper otherwise secured to the body A.

A hod thus constructed, is stronger and more durable than the ordinary wooden hods, is as light or lighterv than they are, and can be made at a less-cost.'

Having thus described our invention,
