Description

M. I. ENGLISH.
GABTER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 17,.1911.
Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
' taken in connection with the accompanying OFFICE.
MAR-Y I..ENGLISH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
GARTER.
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the followmg is a specification.
- This invention relates to improvements n garters for supporting stockings and has for its object to provide a garter which is adapted to securely hold the stocking in position and at the same time permit free movement of the leg, without liability to tear the stocking.
The novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description,
drawings, in which,
Figure 1 illustrates the garter as worn; Fig. 2 illustrates the back of the knee, showing the arrangement of the garter 'as worn; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the garter.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the leg of thewearer, the stocking being shown as extending above the knee to point indicated by the numeral 11. A strip of elastic material encircles the leg above the knee and forms the band, 13,- the ends of the strip being crossed at the back of the knee, as shown at 14, and brought around the leg below the knee and secured together. The band, 13, has arranged thereon the slides, 15,
which are provided on their upper side with of the wearer.
loops, 16, adapted to be connected with supporters, 17 which are secured to a garment These buckles are normally arranged on opposite sides of the leg and may be adjusted to any desired position.
One end of the strip has secured thereto a pad, 18, to which are fastened the members, 19 and 20,- which carry the buttons, 21 and 22, respectively. The other end of the strip is formed with a loop, 23, by means of a buckle, 24, to which the end of the strip is secured and which is adapted to slide along Specification of Letters Patent.
the strip. A member, 25, is connected with the loop, 23, and engages the button, 21.
A strip, 26, has at its upper end a loop, 27,
which surrounds the band, 13, and is adapted to slide on said band to any suitable position. The lower end of the strip 26 has secured thereto a member,28, which engages the button, 22. i
-As thus constructed, the garter is adapted to be adjusted to different lengths and on .account of its encircling the leg both above Patented ec. 3, 1912; Application filed July 17, 1911. Serial No. 639,053. i
and below the knee, the stocking will be securely held, by frictional engagement, against downward displacement. The supporters, 17, hold the garter in proper position and the strip 26 maintains the proper spacing between the bands.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A garter comprising bands adapted to encircle the limb of the wearer above and below the knee, means for adjusting the ef-' fective length of the bands, and means connecting the bands together, said connecting means having'a sliding connection with one band and a readily detachable connection with the other band.
2. A garter comprising an extensible strip of fabric adapted to be arranged in the form of bands encircling the limb of the wearer above and below the knee, means slidable on the band above the knee for connecting the same with a garment of the wearer, means for detachably connecting the ends of the strip together, and means for connecting the bands together, said. connecting means having a sliding connection with the upper band and a readily detachable connection with the lower band,
In testimonywhereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
MARY LENGLISH.
