BATH-TUB COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
Application filed May 21, 1912. Serial No. 698,720.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. CHRIS- TENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tub Covers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to bath tube covers, and has for its object to provide a cover for bath tubs and for similar vessels, which is neat in appearance and which can be readily attached to the rim of the tub, and which, at the same time, can be detached at will and removed when the tub is needed for use.
The objects named are accomplished by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the cover, showing the retaining flaps. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the cover in place, with an elastic element installed therein for causing the overhanging edge of the cover to engage the rim of the tub. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the cover in place, with a further elastic element fixed in the lateral edge thereof. Fig. a shows an elastic element for retaining the cover in place.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a blank, made of canvas, oil-cloth, or other suitable fabric, having an incision cut into each lateral edge, near each end at a point corresponding to that at which the curvature of the tub begins. These incisions extend into the fabric to a point corresponding to the edge of the roll rim of a standard tub 3, upon which it is employed. The free edges, or lateral flaps 1 of the blank will then be folded inwardly upon the body of the blank from their position shown in dotted lines. At the front and rear ends of the blank, as shown in Fig. 1, are secured by the outer edges at 12 strips 8 and 9 respectively, which conform to their respective ends of the blank, and which join upon and are united to their corresponding ends of the side folds 1 at 6 and 7 respectively, thereby forming a continuous pocket 2 adapted to engage the rim of the tub. Hooks 11 also, may be fixed in the side flaps to engage the edges of the rim, to more securely hold the cover in place. It is obvious that the side retaining elements may be made of detachable strips. The strips will be properly attached together and the whole secured by its outer edge to the edge of the cover. In the rear and at each side of this retaining strip is fixed an elastic element made of coil spring, or any suitable elastic, which draws the fabric together, as seen at 4, and which is so arranged that the strip may be readily expanded to encompass the rim; and when it is released the elastic will cause the strip to bind snugly beneath the rim, and to draw the cover tight across the top thereof. It will therefore, present a neat appearance; and it is useful in concealing articles which may be stored in the tub when it is not otherwise in use. A further special need for the cover is in hotels, particularly in dry climates. In these regions the tub which is not used every day accumulates dust, which necessitates its washing before it can be used. By employing one of these covers all dust is kept from the tub making it ready for use at all times.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A cover for bath tubs and the like comprising a flexible element conforming to the exterior dimensions of the tub, having a retaining portion folded inwardly upon the lower face thereof and an elastic element secured in the inner edge of said folded por- 2. A bath tub cover comprising a flexible element conforming in outline to that of a tub and having at each side edge a portion adapted to be folded inwardly upon the lower face of the cover, and an end member secured by its edge to each end of the cover upon its lower face, the terminals thereof being united to the corresponding terminals of the si le portions, and retaining elements fixed in said folded portions.
