LOOK non SATCI-IEL-FRAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
T 0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JACOBRITTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in. New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and-useful Improve= ments in Looks for Satchel-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved lock for the frames of satchels, bags, pocketbooks and the like, by which a double locking action is imparted to the frames, while the opening, is accomplished by a single action of the locking device. i
In carrying out my invention the use of the well-known locking knobs one on each jaw of the satchel is dispensed with, and one knob only used on one jaw of the satchel-frame, while the second knob is applied to an encircling member by which the locking action of the knobs and a locking action on the jaws of the satchel-frame are obtained, while the opening of the satchel is accomplished by one single movement of the encircling member, so that the opening of the satchel is facilitated and simplified, while by the double locking action the accidental opening of the satchel is prevented.
In carrying out the object of my invention the satchel-frame is provided on one jaw with the usual knob and on the opposite jaw with an encircling member, which is pivoted to said opposite jaw and provided with a knob acting in conjunction with the knob on the jaw for closing the satchelframe in connection with clamping cheeks on the encircling member engaging the raises or projections on the jaws of the satchel-frame, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a satchel with my improved satchel-lock applied thereto, showing the satchel and lock in open position, Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the satchel-lock, drawn on a larger scale and showing the satchel in closed position, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3, 3, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the lock, showing it in closed position, and drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the different figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, a, a represent the jaws of a frame for satchels, bags,
wall ofthe encircling member 01, said knobv b on the member (Z interlocking with the knob b on the jaw a. The encircling member (Z is provided with downwardly-extending lugs or clasps d which extend over the opposite sides of the jaws a, a and engage with raised port-ions or projections 01, on said jaws. When the encircling member 03 is moved on its-pivot connection with the .jaw a in locked position over the jaws the knobs Z2, Z9 interlock with each other, while the clamping portions or lugs 0Z interlock with the projections a on the jaws, so that a double locking action on the satchel-frame is obtained.
When the satchel is tobe opened, the encircling member is moved on its pivotconnection with the jaw into upwardly-in clined position, so as to discontinue the locking action of the knobs one on the other, as well as the locking action of the encircling member d on the projections a of the jaws a, a whereby the satchel is opened by one operation of the encircling member, without loss of time and without themanipulation necessary in opening a doublelock satchel-frame in which the knobs on the jaws interlock with each other and in which the jaws are locked together by a pivoted member encircling the knobs and engaging the jaws.
In operating the improved lock, the jaws are placed together and the encircling member is moved on its pivot-connection with one of the jaws over the knob on one jaw, whereby simultaneously the knob on the encircling member interlocks with the knob 011 the jaw and the clamping lugs of the encircling member with the jaws of the frame of the satchel, both operationsthe interlocking of the knobs and the locking of the encircling member with the jaws of the satchel-framebeing accomplished by the one operation of closing the satchel-frame.
Patented Nov. 26, 1912.
Application filed September 12, 1912. Serial No. 720,010. C
the jaws of the satchel-frame.
I claim:
1. In a lock for satchels, the combination, with a satchel-frame one jaw of which is provided with a knob, of an encircling member pivoted to the other jaw and provided with a knob interlocking with the knob on the jaw, and with lugs or clasps interlocking with the jaws of the satchel-frame.
2. Ina lock for satchels, the combination, with a satchel-frame one jaw of which is provided with a knob and exterior projections, and the other jaw with exterior projections, of an encircling member pivoted to the other jaw and provided with a knob interlocking with theknob on the first jaw, said encircling member being provided with clamping lugs or clasps adapted to engage the projections on the jaws.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in p presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB BITTER.
