To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALBERT GERDUM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lakewood, in the count-y of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Attaehing Means for Registers, ventilators, &c.; and l hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in pipe-attaching means for hot-air-registers, ventilators, or similar devices.
rllhe primary object of this invention is to provide simple, convenient and eflicient means for attaching an air-conducting pipe to a frame arranged at an outlet or inlet of said pipe.
lilith this object in view, and to the end of attaining any other advantage hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
ln said drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the frame of a hot-air-register or ventilator and shows an air-conducting pipe attached to said frame by means embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2, Fig. 1, looking downwardly. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3--3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.` Fig. i is a horizontal section on line L.L -4:, F ig. 3, looking downwardly. Fig. 5 is a section corresponding with Fig. 1, except that F ig. 5 shows the relative position of the parts upon the application of the aforesaid :trame to a flange ot' the pipe preparatory to clamping the pipe-flange to a flange formed on said frame. The frame B is provided at its rear or inner side with a rearwardly or inwardly projecting flange which is formed at and runs'all around an opening 12 which is formed centrallyoithe trame. rlhe flange is arranged to overlap the inner side ofthe flange a. The frame B is provided in front of the opening 12 with a grill or grating 13 shown integral with the frame.
The frame-fiange b is provided at the sides of the opening 12 with slots 15 which extend laterally through the flange and to the longitudinal edge of the flange. Two clamps C are arranged at opposite sides respectively of said opening 12 and at the outer side of the frame-flange b. Each clamp C consists of a metal angle-piece having its two wings 16 and 17 arranged substantially at a right angle to each other. The wing 16 of each angle-piece or clamp C faces the outer side and extends transversely of' the frame-liange Z) and is arranged opposite a slot 15 in said flange and projects rearwardly. The wing 17 of each angle-piece projects laterally of and outwardly from the wing 16 of the anglepiece and faces the rear or inner side and extends transversely of the frame A between the flange Z9 and a rearwardly or inwardly projecting fiange 1S which is formed on and spaced laterally and outwardly from said flange Z) and extends up and down said frame. Said flange 1S oi' the frame B, as shown in Figs. et and 5, is provided with a slot 20 which is spaced laterally and outwardly from the frame-flange o and extends laterally through said frame and has a forwardly or outwardly Vfacing rear wall 21 overlapped by the outer end of the wing 17 of the adjacent angle-piece, and said wall 21 serves therefore as an abutment which prevents rearward or inward movement of said wing at said end of the wing. The wing 17 of each angle-piece is provided in proximity to the wing 16 of the angle-piece with a screw-threaded hole 22 which extends laterally through said wing 17 and is engaged by the correspondingly screwthreaded shank D of a screw whose head d overlaps the outer side or face of the frame B, and said shank extends through a slot 28 formed in said frame and registering with said hole, and said slot is large enough transversely of said frame to accommodate manipulationof the screw as required to actuate the angle-piece or clamp operatively connected with the screw.
Preparatory to the attachment of the pipe-flange a to the frame B, the screw of the wing 17 of each angle-piece or clamp is rotated in the direction required or manipulated to permit swinging of said clamp or angle-piece rearwardly or inwardly into the position shown in Fig. 5, so as to space the wing 1G of said clamp or angle-piece outwardly from the pipe-flange a and thereby permit the application of said frame to the pipe-flange in such a manner that said frame shall be so positioned relative to the pipe-flange that the latter shall be overlapped at its inner side by the frame-flange b, whereupon said screw, which has its head abutting against the outer side or face of said frame, as shown in Fig. 5, is rotated, while its head is held against lsaid frame, in the direction required to swing the connected clamp or angle-piece toward said frame and into the position shown in Fig. 4. Obviously said clamp or angle-piece cannot move rearwardly or inwardly at the outer end of its wing 17 because of the abutment formed for said wing by the forwardly facing wall 21 of the slot Q0 into which said wing projects, so that rotation of the screw in the last-mentioned direction, when the connected clamp or angle-piece is in the position shown in Fig. 5, results in swinging said clamp or angle-piece toward the inner side of the frame and into the position shown in Fig. l and thereby causes the wing 16 of said clamp or angle-piece to clamp the pipe-flange a, to the frame-flange ZJ. The clamp or angle-pieces are adapted to be swung therefore from and toward the inner side of the frame and arranged to clamp the pipe-flange to the frame-flange during the actuation of the clamps or anglepieces toward said side of the frame, and obviously the screw constitutes means lfor actuating the connected clamp or anglepiece'from a point forwardly of the face of the frame B and the head of the screw coperates with the face of said frame in securing said angle-piece or clamp in its clamping position. i
I would here remark that the wing 16 of each clamp or angle-piece is preferably provided with a lug 24 which is arranged to press a portion 25 of the pipe-flange into the adjacent slot 15 in the frame-flange Z) during the swing of the clamp or anglepiece toward the inner side of the frame, as shown in Fig. Ll, so that said lug, in the position of the clamp or angle-piece shown in Fig. Ll., is instrumental in supporting the pipe A. I would also remark that each clamp C is, in the pipe-flange-clamping position of said clamp, clamped to the inner side of the frame B by said screw, as shown in Fig. 4, and that in said position of said clamp the shanl D of said screw abuts against the outer end wall 26 (see Fig. t) of the slot 23 through which said shank extends so that said shank and said wall cooperate in forming means for positively preventing withdrawal or disengagement of said clamp from t-he pipe-flange in said position of the clamp. It will also be observed that as the slots or openings 15 in the frame-flange b extend to the rear edge of said flange the actuation of each clamp C from the position shown in Fig. l into the posit-ion shown in Fig. 5 is all that is required to render the frame B removable from the pipe A.
lVhat I claim is 1. The combination, with a frame adapted to be placed in front of an outlet or inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly projecting iiange at said inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at one side with an inwardly projecting flange which is arranged to be overlapped at one side thereof by a side of the pipe-flange, of a movable clamp wholly carried by the frame and contoured and arranged to clamp the pipeflange at 4the aforesaid side of the pipeflange to the aforesaid side of the frameflange, and means whereby the clamp may be secured in its clamping position.
2. T he combination, with a frame adapted to be placed in front of an outlet or inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at said inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at one side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to be overlapped at one side thereof by a side of the pipe-flange, of a movable clamp wholly carried by the frame and adapted to be swung from and toward the inner side of the frame, which clamp is contoured and arranged to clamp the pipe-flange at the aforesaid side of the pipe-flange to the aforesaid side of the frame-flange during the swinging of the clamp toward the inner side of the frame, and means whereby the clamp may be secured in its clamping position.
3. The combination, with a frame adapted to be placed in front of an outlet or inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at lsaid inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at one side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to be overlapped at its outer side by the inner side of the pipe-flange, of a movable clamp wholly carried by the frame and contoured and arranged to clamp the pipe-flange at the aforesaid side of the pipe-flange to the aforesaid side of the frame-flange, and means whereby the clamp may be secured in its clamping position.

The combination, with a frame adapted to be placed in front of an outlet or inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at said inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at one side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to be overlapped at its outer side by the inner side of the pipe-flange, of a movable clamp wholly carried by the frame at the outer side of the frame-flange and adapted to be swung from and toward the inner side of the frame7 which clamp is contoured and arranged to clamp the pipe-flange at the aforesaid side of the pipe-flange to the aforesaid side of the frame-flange during the swinging of the clamp toward the inner side of the frame, and means whereby the clamp may be secured in its clamping position.
5. The combination, with a frame adapted to be placed in front of an outlet or inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at said inlet or outlet7 which frame is provided at one side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to be overlapped at one side thereof by a side of the pipe-flange and having an opening, of a movable member wholly carried by the frame at one side of the frame-flange and adapted to press a portion of the pipe-flange into the aforesaid opening in the frameflange.
6. The combination, with a frame adapted to be placed in front of an outlet or inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at said inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at one side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to be overlapped at its outer side by the inner side of the pipe-fiange and having an opening, of a movable clamp wholly carried by the frame at the out-er side of the frameflange and adapted to be swung from and toward the inner side of the frame, which clamp is contoured and arranged to clamp the pipe-flange at the aforesaid side of the pipe-flange and to press a portion of the pipe-flange into the aforesaid opening during the swinging of the clamp toward the inner side of the frame, and means whereby the clamp may be secured in its clamping position.
7. The combination, with a frame which is adapted to be placed at an outlet or inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at said inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at its inner side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to overlap the inner side of the pipeflange, of a movable angle-piece arranged at the outer side of the frame-flange and adapted to be swung from and toward the inner side of the frame, one wing of the angle-piece facing the outer side and extending transversely of the frame-flange and arranged to attach the pipe-flange to the frame-flange during the swinging of the angle-piece toward the inner side of the frame, and the other wing of the angle-piece extending laterally and outwardly from the first-mentioned wing and facing the inner side of the frame, and a screw screwed into the second-mentioned wing of the angle-piece in proximity to the first-n'ientioned wing and extending through the frame and having a head overlapping the face of the frame, and means for preventing rearward movement of the secondmentioned wing of the angle-pieceat the outer extremity of said wing during the swinging of the angle-piece from the inner side of the frame, the frame being slotted to accommodate the location of the screw during the swinging of the angle-piece.
8. The con'ibination, with frame adapted to be placed at an outlet or inlet of an airconducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at said inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at its inner side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to overlap the inner side of the pipe-flange, said frame having a slot which is spaced laterally and outwardly from the frame-flange and has a forwardly facing wall, of a movable angle-piece arranged at the outer side of the frame-flange and adapted to be swung from and toward the inner side of the frame7 one wing of the angle-piece facing the outer side and extending transversely of the frame-flange and arranged to attach the pipe-flange to the frame-flange during the swinging of the angle-piece toward the inner side of the frame, and the other wing of the angle-piece extending laterally and outwardly from the first-mentioned wing and facing the inner side of the frame and overlapping the aforesaid wall, and a screw screwed into the second-mentioned wing of the angle-piece between the slot and the first-mentioned wing and extending through the frame and having a head overlapping the face of the framea the frame being slotted to accommodate the location of the screw during the swinging of t-he clamp.
9. The combination, with a frame adapted to be placed at an outlet or inlet of an airconducting pipe having an outwardly projecting flange at said inlet or outlet, which frame is provided at its inner side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to overlap one side of the pipe-flange and having a slot extending laterally through said flange of the frame, of a movable clamp arranged opposite said slot and adapted to be swung from and toward the inner side of the frame, which clamp is provided with a lug arranged to press a portion of the pipeflange into said slot during the swinging of the clamp toward the inner side of the frame.
l0. rlhe combination, with a frame adapted to be placed at an outletor inlet of an air-conducting pipe having an outwardly ktoward the inner side of projecting flange at said inlet or outlet, which frarne is provided at its inner side with an inwardly projecting flange arranged to overlap the inner side of the pipe-flange and having a slot extending laterally through said flange of the frame, of a inovable clamp arranged at the outer side of the frame-flange and opposite said slot and adapted to be swung from and the fraine, which clanip is contoured and arranged to press a portion of the pipe-flange into said slot during the swinging of the clamp toward the inner side of the frame.
11. The combination, with an air-conducting pipe having an aperture forming an outlet or inlet and provided at said aperture with an outwardly projecting flange, and a fraine placed in front of said aperture and provided at its inner side with an inwardly projecting flange overlapped at one side by a side of the pipe-flange and having an opening arranged to pei-init the pressing of a portion of the pipe-flange into said opening, of a movable member wholly carried by the franie and holding a portion of the pipe-flange in engagement with the aforesaid opening.
12. In combination, an air-conducting pipe having an aperture forming an outlet or inlet and provided at said aperture with an outwardly projecting flange, and a franie placed in front of said aperture and provided at its inner side with an inwardly projecting flange overlapped at one side by a side of the pipe-flange and having a slot extending laterally through said flange of the frame and to the rear edge of the fraineflange, and a portion of the pipe-flange being pressed into the aforesaid slot.
