ALBERT G. SCHERER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE EXCELSIOR STEEL FURNACE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
MEANS FOR SECURING REGISTER-FRAMES TO STACK-HEADS.
' Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Patented June 1, 1915.
Application filed October 9, 1914. Serial No. 865,815.
Register-Frames to Stack-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for mounting and securing a register frame to the stack head or boot of a single or double walls stack for hot-air conduits.
The particular object of my invention is the provision of a register frame with simple means whereby said frame may be readily attached to or detached from the stack head opening without injuring the locking means or the'parts secured together.
Another object is the provision of looking means that are adapted to cooperate with the stack heads already installed in order that the register frame may be readily secured thereto without the necessity of altering the parts or the use of special tools. Other objects are to provide a register frame with a locking means that will not readily jar loose is inexpensive to manufacture, and which is simple to manipulate so that the register frame may be readily attached to or removed from the stack head opening by persons unfamiliar with heating appliances.
The above objects I prefer to accomplish by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical front elevation of a stack head having a register frame secured thereto by my improved attaching and looking device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section thereof taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail of the lock employed in connection with my invention, looking at the.
same from the rear of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a double wall stack head or boot that is usually mounted upon the upper end of a hot-air stack or interposed in the same at a convenient point for the discharge of the heat units through a lateral opening therein. This stack head preferably is rectangular or box-shaped in construction having its front wall cut away to provide a discharge opening into which the register is fitted. The details of the construction of the head need not be mentioned herein as it is of any usual or well known form; suflice it to say however that the portion of the double wall thereof forming the lower edge of the opening is compressed to form a single wall a, as illustrated. in Fig. 3, while the upper edge and side edges of said opening is formed by compressing the double wall of the top of the stack head as shown at b, Fig. 2, and forming lateral rims or flanges F), at their outer edges.
The register frame comprises a substantially rectangular shaped member consisting of top and bottom strips 5 and 6 that are connected at their ends by side-strips 7, and 8. These strips are preferably angular metal having a shallow longitudinal depression 9 of their inner edges in which the edge of the register face is adapted to be seated and secured. The bottom strip 6 has its upper edge bent inwardly and downwardly to form a lateral flange 10 that is adapted to fit over and rest upon the reduced portion a of the head at the lower edge of the register opening as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The top and side strips of the register frame have their edges flanged rearwardly substantially at a right angle to themselves which flanges are adapted to fit snugly within the opening within the stack head so that the outwardly turned flanges of the stack head will abut the inner surface of the top and sides of the register frame.
In order to lock the register frame into the stack head after being placed into position 1 tap a screw or bolt 12 transversely through the top strip at about the longitudinal center thereof. The inner portion of bolt 12 is adapted to engage and screw into one or more clamping elements or pawls 13, 13,that are so positioned that their lower pendent ends will be inside the rib or lip b of the compressed portion 6 of the upper edge of the stack head. Thus it will be observed that when the flange 10 of the register frame is placed over the lower edge of the opening in the stack head and the upper flange 11 forced into place in the top of said opening the pawls 13 may be placed upon the opposite or inside of lip b and the bolt tightened. This will draw said pawls against the lip and lock the register frame against removal from the stack head. In order to permit of the- ,a preferred form of carrying out my invention it of' course will be obvious, to others skilled in the art to which it pertains, that various modifications thereof are PCS? sible without departing from the spirit of my invention. I desire it understood there fore that all obvious changes and refinements thereof are contemplated within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
r 1. The combination with a stack head having an opening therein and an upturned lip adjacent the upper edge of said opening, of a register frame mounted on said head and surrounding said opening, a bolt tapped through said frame above said lip, and apawl having threaded engagement with the outer end of said bolt adapted to engage and be clamped against said lip by the rotation of said bolt.
2. The combination of a stack head hav ing' an opening therein, and an upturned lip adjacent the upper edge of said opening, of a register frame mounted on said frame mountedon saidhead and surrounding said opening, means for securingsaid frame to said head comprising a bolt tapped.
through said frame and intosaid pawl one 1 end of which engages the adjacent portion of said head, and a slot below said bolt through which access may be had to said pawl.
a. The combination 'with a stack head 7 having an opening therein and an upturned lip adjacent the upper edge of said opening, of a register frame mounted on said head and surrounding 'said opening, a bolt tapped through said frame above said lip, a pawl threadedlyemounted on the outer end of said bolt adapted to engage and be clamped against saidflip, and'a segmental slot below said bolt through which said pawl is accessible.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signaa ture in the presence of two. witnesses.
