CHARLES IV. KIMBALL, (IF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
THUMB-NUT WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,988, dated February 19, 1889.
I Application filed June 5, 1888. Serial No. 276,134; (No model.)
. of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying d ra w ings, f orm in g a part of th is specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a false thumb-nut which may be placed perma nently upon any ordinary threaded bolt and accompanying nut, and used as a wrench in manipulating the threaded nut.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a screw-threaded bolt and nut embodying my improved feature; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same in the plane 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a perspective of the same.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an ordinary screw-threaded bolt, B the usual nut having a threaded engagement with the same, and O a false or blank thumb-nut.
The false thumb-nut is of the ordinary design, consisting of the wings a a and the central body or blank-nut, a. In this case the thumb-nut is not threaded, but is provided with the usual perforation, b, and loosely engages with the bolt, as shown in Fig. 3.
The body of the thumb-nut is provided with the rectangular aperture (1, opening in from the two sides at right angles to the wings aa, so that the threaded nut may be loosely and removably inserted from either side. This construction permits of a number of differentsized nuts being used with the same wrenchnut, as they need not fit closely, and the nut and thumb nut are easily separated when not required to be used together.
In operation the threaded nut is first inserted in the body of the thumb-nut and then both are placed upon the bolt, the thumb-nut serving as a wrench to tighten. or loosen the threaded nut. This arrangement is especially useful and convenient on carriage-bolts and bolts of different kinds. It dispenses wit-11 the use of a wrench and causes a large saving in the manufacture, as the false thumb-nut and the real nut do not cost as much as a threaded thumb-nut would alone.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A false or blank thumb-nut provided with a rectangular aperture opening in from the two sides at right angles to the wings for the loose insertion therein of a screw-threaded nutfrom either side, substantially as set forth.
2. A false or blank thumb-nut consisting of the wings a a and the body a, said body being provided with an aperture extending through from side to side and adapted to loosely retain a screw-threaded nut therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A false or blank thumb-nut provided with a rectangular opening extending through from side to side, in combination with a screwthreaded nut, whereby the threaded nut may be loosely inserted and removably retained in said thumb-nut, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
