Be it known that I, DANIEL W. TOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for furniture or jointbolts, as they are sometimes called.

This invention is especially designed and intended for use to retain the superstructure, as a mirror-standard, on the main base or body of a dressing-table or to retain the parts of knockdown furniture securely together.

This invention has to do with improvements in such devices whereby the assembling of the parts .isgreatly facilitated and whereby the bolt in use does not have separable parts likely to become lost and to provide an improved and convenient construction for inserting the fastener in place in the furniture.

Further objects will appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly defined, and pointed out in the claims.

A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this j specification, in which Figure 1 is a detail rear elevation view of my improved structure as applied to the manufacture of furniture to secure the superstructure, as a mirror-stand, on the base or body portion of a dresser or table below. Fig. 2 is an inverted detail plan view of the structure appearing in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: illustrates a wrench or crank for in j serting the bolt into the wood. In the drawings, similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Suitable notches are formed in the nut, so that it can be readily turned by inserting any instrument, such as the end of a screw-driver or the wrench G, into the notches and using the same like a lever to turn the nut. The opposite sides of the bolt B between these screw-threads are flattened, as at b I), either by making an indentation therein or by cutting away the sides of the screws. This part can be squared or made irregular in form by any suitable means. The wrench C, with a series of slots 0, is provided for grasping the bolt at this point, the wrenchbeing adapted to varying sizes. This wrench is preferably provided with a crank-handle D, so that the screws can be turned in or out very readily.

Attention is called to the fact that by simply loosening the nut B without removing it the top A can be removed by passing the body of the bolt B outwardly through the open slot a. This is of great advantage both in the matter of assembling the furniture in the first place and also in disassei bling it as for the purpose of shipment. It results in a great saving and avoids the possible injury to the parts and to the joint-bolt or loss of any parts, the parts being always in proper position for immediate use with the smallest possible amount of adjustment.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. In a furniture-fastening, the combination of a top board A, having the recess a and an open slot a therein; a su erstructure A a bolt B flattened at b provi ed with a wood and the nut being arranged in the recess in the opposite member, in position to clamp at the opposite sides of said slot, coacting for I the purpose specified.
